Best Western Rewards: How to earn and redeem points, elite status and more

Best Western Rewards is a program many travelers overlook. After all, it isn't a transfer partner of any major credit card rewards currencies, and its elite benefits are minimal. But, the program has a mix of luxurious WorldHotels properties, value-oriented SureStay Hotels and Best Western hotels and resorts at various price points where you can earn and redeem points. So, here's what you should know about Best Western Rewards.

Best Western Rewards hotel brands

Best Western Rewards serves three portfolios that contain brands as follows:

  • Best Western Hotels & Resorts: Aiden by Best Western, Best Western, Best Western Plus, Best Western Premier, BW Premier Collection, BW Signature Collection, Executive Residency by Best Western, Glo, Vib and @Home by Best Western
  • SureStay Hotels: SureStay, SureStay Collection, SureStay Studio and SureStay Plus
  • WorldHotels: WorldHotels Crafted, WorldHotels Distinctive, WorldHotels Elite and WorldHotels Luxury

Best Western acquired WorldHotels in 2019 to add some more luxurious hotels to the Best Western Rewards portfolio. Meanwhile, Best Western created SureStay Hotels in 2016 as a white-label portfolio designed to appeal to value-minded travelers.

Best Western Rewards elite status

Blue is the base tier of Best Western Rewards membership, but you can earn Best Western Rewards elite status when you meet specific qualifying night thresholds within a calendar year:

  • Gold: 5 qualifying nights
  • Platinum: 7 qualifying nights
  • Diamond: 15 qualifying nights
  • Diamond Select: 25 qualifying nights

Once you accrue enough qualifying nights in a calendar year for a specific Best Western status, you'll hold that status for the rest of the current calendar year and the entire next calendar year. So if you stay 15 qualifying nights in 2025, you'll hold Best Western Diamond status through Dec. 31, 2026.

The perks of Best Western elite status are minimal. However, Gold members and above receive complimentary water and 500 bonus points upon arrival at a participating hotel (bonus points aren't offered at some international locations) and Platinum members and above get early check-in and late checkout (both based on availability). Plus, Best Western Rewards elite members enjoy bonus points on qualifying stays as follows:

  • Gold: 10% bonus
  • Platinum: 15% bonus
  • Diamond: 30% bonus
  • Diamond Select: 50% bonus

Finally, Best Western offers a generous status match offer that lets members match any other hotel elite status. Best Western considers the number of nights you'd need to stay for the other program's elite status, so you'll want to match whatever hotel elite status you have that requires the most nights to earn.

If you live in North America, you can send an email with your full name, address, email address, phone number, Best Western Rewards member number and proof of elite status in another hotel program to StatusMatch@bestwestern.com. Proof of elite status in another hotel program can be a copy of the other program's loyalty card or account statement, provided it includes your full name.

How to earn Best Western Rewards points

It can be difficult to earn Best Western Rewards points because the program doesn't partner with any major transferable currencies. However, as you'll learn in this section, there are still several ways to earn them.

Stays with Best Western

You'll earn points on the room rate before taxes and fees for qualifying nights at Best Western hotel brands unless you book through an online travel agency or tour operator, or book an ineligible rate, including employee rates, wholesale rates, crew rates, and discounted long stay rates of 30 nights or more.

Specifically, you'll earn 10 points per dollar spent at most Best Western Rewards hotel brands — although you'll only earn 5 points per dollar spent at SureStay Studio by Best Western, Executive Residency by Best Western and @Home by Best Western hotels.

SureStay by Best Western Helen Downtown
SureStay by Best Western Helen Downtown. BEST WESTERN

You can earn points for up to 10 rooms per stay in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean and up to three rooms per stay in other regions as long as you stay in one of the rooms, pay for all the rooms, members in the rooms don't claim points and you tie your Best Western Rewards number to the rooms at booking or check-in.

If you're traveling on a group booking, up to 10 rooms per stay can earn points in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean, and up to three rooms per stay can earn points in other regions. However, only the person making the reservation can decide which members receive points.

Best Western Rewards credit cards

Best Western Rewards offers two cobranded credit cards: the $89 annual fee Best Western Rewards® Premium Visa Signature® Card and the no-annual-fee Best Western Rewards® Visa Signature® Card.

The information for the Best Western Rewards Premium Visa Signature Card and Best Western Rewards Visa Signature Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Additionally, cardholders receive up to two complimentary night awards each anniversary and enjoy automatic Platinum elite status.

Meanwhile, the no-annual-fee Best Western Rewards Visa Signature Card earns 4 points per dollar spent on Best Western stays and 2 points per dollar spent on all other purchases. How to redeem Best Western Rewards points

TPG's November 2025 valuations value Best Western points at 0.6 cents each, so you'll typically want to get at least that value from your points when you redeem them. Now, here's a look at some of the ways you can redeem Best Western Rewards points.

Book award stays with Best Western Rewards points

Award nights at Best Western Rewards properties range from 8,000 to 70,000 points per night. Rates vary based on various factors, including the property and the dates of your stay.

To see award options, log in to your Best Western account and check the "Use Rewards Points" box before searching for your stay. Then you can check the results via a map or list, and filter by various factors including distance, airport shuttle, free breakfast and free parking.

Redeeming Best Western points
BEST WESTERN

Some properties may offer room types at various award costs. For example, on a sample date I searched, the Best Western Hotel Fino Tokyo Akasaka in Japan offered a double room for 28,000 points, a queen room for 32,000 points and a room with two single beds for 40,000 points.

Redeeming Best Western points
BEST WESTERN

You can also redeem as few as 5,000 points per night via Pay with Points. If you do so, the first 5,000 points will earn you $25 off your room rate, and each additional 1,000 points will earn you an additional $5 discount. You'll get 0.5 cents per point when you use Pay with Points, and you'll still earn points on the paid part of your booking.

Exchange Best Western Rewards points for airline rewards

You can convert your Best Western points into airline rewards with the following programs:

  • Aeromexico Rewards: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,600 points
  • Air Canada Aeroplan: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,000 points
  • Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,000 points
  • Avianca LifeMiles: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,000 miles
  • Cathay Asia Miles: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,000 miles
  • Flying Blue: 6,000 Best Western points for 1,000 points
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,200 points

TPG's November 2025 valuations value Best Western points at 0.6 cents each, and these airline rewards at 0.8 to 1.55 cents each. Therefore, you'll almost always lose value when converting Best Western points into airline rewards.

Redeem Best Western points for gift cards

You can redeem points for Best Western e-gift cards at the following rates:

  • $10 Best Western e-gift card: 2,000 points
  • $25 Best Western e-gift card: 5,000 points
  • $50 Best Western e-gift card: 10,000 points
  • $100 Best Western e-gift card: 20,000 points
  • $250 Best Western e-gift card: 50,000 points

As you can tell, you'll get 0.5 cents per point when you redeem points for Best Western gift cards.

You can also redeem Best Western points for U.S. Digital Select gift cards at a rate of 16,000 points for a $50 gift card, 32,000 points for a $100 gift card and 64,000 points for a $200 gift card. Redeeming Best Western points for U.S. Digital Select gift cards only gives you 0.31 cents per point, though.

Transfer Best Western points to another member

You can transfer up to 150,000 points per rolling calendar year to other members. However, you can only transfer points in increments of 1,000 points, and your account must be at least 30 days old and not in a restricted state.

Best Western Rewards must review and approve transfers of over 70,000 points, so it may be best to keep your transfer to 70,000 points or less.

Donate Best Western points

Finally, you can donate Best Western points to select charities, including the American Red Cross, Canadian Red Cross, Hotels for Heroes, Best Friends Animal Society and two Best Western for a Better World programs.

Donate Best Western points
BEST WESTERN

Most donations are valued at 500 Best Western points for a $2 donation, resulting in a redemption rate of 0.4 cents per point.

It’s officially flu season: How to avoid getting sick on a plane

It's officially that time of year. Temperatures are plummeting, hot tea is flowing and flu season is here. But that's not the only illness looming over travelers this holiday season.

According to Dr. Waleed Javaid, epidemiologist and professor of medicine at West Virginia University, "Currently, there is a mix of respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). Other common illnesses include norovirus and bacterial infections like E. coli. As we enter the colder months and holiday gatherings, respiratory infections are on the rise due to increased close contact and indoor activities."

Thankfully, we learned much about mitigating sickness while traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic. "COVID taught us the importance of hand hygiene and boosting immunity through lifestyle practices," said Dr. Taz Bhatia, a board-certified integrative medicine physician and medical adviser to the cold and flu medicine brand Genexa. Fortunately, many precautions you learned to stop the spread of COVID-19 should also help protect you from seasonal influenza, according to Healthline (which is owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures).

The last thing you want is to catch a bug on a plane and be miserable for the rest of your vacation. To protect yourself — and your family — from catching the flu and other illnesses while traveling, follow these tips.

Wear a mask

In the past, wearing a mask was a requirement when flying. Though these regulations have been lifted, wearing a face covering on your next flight can still help prevent you from getting sick. A 2020 study by the U.S. Department of Defense found the risk of COVID-19 transmission on a plane was "extremely unlikely" when masks are worn. Masks will also protect you from other common respiratory viruses, like influenza, that are transmitted through the air.

Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the use of masks for sick travelers (with fever or respiratory symptoms) to help reduce the spread of respiratory germs and for people sitting near sick travelers (with fever or respiratory symptoms) when the sick traveler cannot tolerate wearing a mask.

Keep your hands clean

We all know that washing our hands is key to preventing sickness, but it's especially true when traveling.

"Keep your hands clean," said Dr. Nicholas Testa, California regional chief medical officer at CommonSpirit Health. "This means a combination of good hand hygiene with either soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer."

According to the CDC, hand washing is the "single most important infection control measure." It recommends using "alcohol-based hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol) if soap and water are not available."

Skip the bathroom

If it's a short flight, make sure you go to the bathroom before your flight takes off, New York-based primary care physician Dr. Marina Gafanovich told TPG. Why?

"You have to understand that many people are sharing that bathroom," she said. "And research suggests that there are significant germs on sinks, flush handles and toilet seats on airplane bathrooms. That is why it's best to use paper towels when you touch the toilet seat or faucet or even the door latch."

Stay hydrated

MASKOT/GETTY IMAGES

While a comfortable indoor humidity is anywhere from 30% to 65%, the humidity inside an airplane cabin is only around 10% to 20%, according to Northwestern Medicine. The very low humidity of the cabin air can dry out the mucous membranes of your nose and airways. When these tissues dry out, they are much more susceptible to viruses and bacteria. To combat this, stay hydrated.

"Bring your own bottle of water and aim to drink 8 ounces of water per hour you're in the air to maintain your hydration," said Dr. Nate Favini, the chief medical officer at Pair Team, a virtual care company. "Alcohol and caffeine will dehydrate you even more, so save the cocktails and coffee for your destination."

Avoid certain areas of the plane

In addition to washing your hands, be cognizant of those areas on a plane that are particularly high-touch surfaces. The flu virus, for example, can live on any hard surface for up to 24 hours.

"Don't use the tray table and, if you really have to, make sure you carry sanitary wipes with you and clean it before you use it," said Gafanovich. "Also, don't store items in the seatback pocket. We know many people use it, so it's likely to be full of germs."

Testa also recommends avoiding or wiping down overhead air vents, lavatory flush buttons and seat belt buckles. So, be sure to stock up on hand sanitizing wipes before your next flight.

Stick with the classics, like Purell, or try Trip Wipes, antibacterial towelettes with a refreshing citrus scent designed specifically for travelers. And if you just want to spray your hands (or everything), try Dr. Bronner's lavender-scented organic hand sanitizer spray in Transportation Security Administration-friendly bottles.

Don't touch your face

Even if your hands are clean, it's best to keep them away from your face, too.

"Even if your hands have touched the dirtiest, germiest surfaces, you won't get sick from that unless you bring those germs to a point of entry (nose, mouth, eyes)," said Florida-based internist Dr. Frank Contacessa. "Get in the habit of never rubbing your eyes, touching your mouth or your nose unless you just washed your hands. This is one of the greatest ways to avoid getting sick."

Wear gloves

Just can't kick the habit of touching your face? Try gloves.

Dr. Julie Fischer, an associate research professor in the department of microbiology and immunology at Georgetown University, told TPG, "Gloves are useful in that they remind people not to touch their own noses and mouth ... when you're wearing gloves, you become hyper-conscious of that. But the best protection for individuals is to be very careful about handwashing."

Choose your seat carefully

OLGA PANKOVA/GETTY IMAGES

Studies have shown that the aisle seats on an airplane experience significantly more traffic and run a greater risk of exposure. Why? Well, in part, sick patients tend to brace themselves on those seats when walking to the bathroom.

"The window seat is a better selection if you want to minimize the risk of respiratory transmission," said Testa. These seats generally don't have as much contact with passengers.

Keep your air vent on

While you might think that sitting in recycled air for hours could increase your risk of illness, keeping your air vent on may actually help.

"There's been some research that showed that using the overhead air vent, directed straight downward, can create a cone of protection," said Contacessa. "It can actually prevent airborne germs from getting close to you. The airflow from the vent can help to ward off another passenger's sneeze germs."

In fact, high-efficiency particulate air, or HEPA, filters found on planes remove at least 99.97% of airborne viruses and bacteria. That air is also refreshed about 20 times per hour, whereas an office only gets refreshed about 10 times.

Prepare your body

VORDA/GETTY IMAGES

Before you even set foot on a plane, you can start preventive measures to avoid getting sick. The CDC recommends staying updated on vaccinations, including annual flu shots, COVID-19 boosters and RSV vaccines for those eligible, to minimize the risk of severe illness.

In addition, "Prioritize sleep, a balanced diet, and supplements like vitamin D and zinc," said Bhatia.

It's also worth packing vitamin C. "Studies have shown that people under stress who take 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C per day are less likely to fall ill with viral infections," said Favini. "And travel is often stressful."

Bottom line

Even though the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is long gone, staying healthy when traveling is still important. The above tips can help minimize your risk this flu season so you can make the most of your holiday travels.

When stocking up on supplements, hand wipes and other supplies, don't forget that some credit cards earn bonus points at drugstores or grocery stores. And when it comes time to update your vaccines, consider the best credit cards for medical expenses.

12 surprising winter vacation ideas for a warm-weather getaway

If you crave the sensation of winter sun on your skin amid the slowly dropping temperatures in the United States, a few obvious holiday destinations may spring to mind.

Mexico, Florida, the Maldives and Dubai are all classics for a reason, delivering scorching temperatures throughout the shivering depths of December and January. But that also means they're very popular — and if you find yourself lusting after a hot vacation every winter, chances are you've already been to a few of them, anyway.

If you're looking for new winter vacation ideas, consider these 12 unexpected locales for a warm-weather getaway.

Penang, Malaysia

With a latitude of about 5 degrees north, this little island just off the western coast of Malaysia guarantees heat year-round. Following big rains in what we'd call fall, the weather is most ideal from December through February. Think highs in the mid-80s and lows in the mid-70s in December, with things warming up a few degrees in the months following. Humidity is notoriously lower than the rest of the year, making things quite pleasant.

Sun seekers can find plenty of it on the sandy beaches encircling the isle — though note the Malacca Strait is not the place to swim, due to jellyfish. The pools at many hotels offer fabulous places to dip instead.

The destination is a hot spot for culture seekers and foodies. There are dozens of Bib Gourmand eateries, not to mention a couple that are Michelin-starred, and street food stalls and markets galore, promising spicy, smoky and exciting flavors plus delicious refreshments such as nutmeg juice.

As a major trading port, Penang embraces several distinctive cultures and religions. Four of the most famous houses of worship are found on the same road, dubbed the Street of Harmony. It's part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of historic George Town, where visitors of all ilks mingle happily, posing with iconic street art, riding trishaws and shopping for everything from Chinese medicinal herbs to handicrafts to clothing.

TPG tip: Opened in February 2025 on George Town's Millionaire's Row, The Millen Penang, Autograph Collection, is an uber-glamorous city hotel that also offers island resort panoramas, especially from its clear-sided ninth-floor lap pool. Rooms and suites come with free-standing bathtubs overlooking the turquoise water. Rates start at $198 or 39,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night this winter.

La Gomera, Spain

Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Lanzarote are well known in the world of winter sun-seeking, thanks to their prime position off the coast of northwest Africa. (Average highs range from 70 to 79 degrees in October, dropping to the mid-60s to mid-70s from December to March.)

All of these bigger Canary Islands are usually safe bets, weatherwise. But there are eight main islands, and La Gomera, the second smallest, is one to carefully consider. Temperatures typically swing from around 67 to 77 degrees during winter, and the days are typically mild, dry and pleasant. Expect black-sand beaches on which to lie (or play), epic cliffs to hike and plenty of mirador viewing points for the perfect holiday snap — plus the dramatic, UNESCO-listed laurel forests of Garajonay National Park for a day trip adventure.

It's also worth boating to the even smaller El Hierro or the peaceful La Graciosa, which claims to be one of the world's only places to have eschewed asphalted roads. Its dirt roads are ideal for cycling.

TPG tip: Small islands like La Gomera don't have major chain hotels, so for a points booking, opt for "the island of eternal spring," Tenerife, and its warm pink The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama, which has plentiful swimming pools plus a massive spa. Rates start at $334 or 69,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night this winter.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Off the coast of Tanzania is Zanzibar, an archipelago where visitors can embrace a double dose of fascinating culture and sparkling, untouched beaches. January and February are particularly good times to go, with (typically) less rain than in December and temperatures heating up into the 80s, reaching the low 90s.

Highlights include the main island, Unguja, and its old trading quarter, Stone Town — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its "cultural fusion" of African, Arab, European and Indian influences, seen in the architecture, as well as its historic role in the ending of the slave trade. Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is also home to a rare, endangered primate, the Zanzibar red colobus. Beyond Unguja, snorkeling among the coral reefs of the private Chumbe Island, where guests can spend the night in solar-powered eco-bungalows, is quite the experience.

TPG tip: Be in the middle of all the action in Stone Town at the 67-room Park Hyatt Zanzibar, with a zero-edge pool hovering over the beach. Rates start at $392 or 25,000 World of Hyatt points per night this winter.

Valletta, Malta

OK, so Malta will probably not be roasting hot in winter. Expect the low 60s to be your average high; January is typically its coldest month. That said, it's likely to be a good 30 degrees toastier than U.S. cities on the Eastern Seaboard, and rain is at a minimum, while snow is virtually unheard of. This is all thanks to the archipelago's location in the Mediterranean Sea, set off the coast of Italy, Tunisia and Libya.

You can secure a touch of winter sun just about anywhere in Malta, from the historic town of Mdina to the cool, lagoon-skirted islands of Gozo and tiny Comino. Still, the yellow-hued capital Valletta is a great place to start — with the scenic waterfront to mosey along, a 16th-century cathedral, the Fort St. Angelo site and the picturesque Upper Barrakka Gardens, not to mention nearby towns such as Sliema to explore. TV and film fans will love it here, too, for Valletta has starred as a filming location in "Game of Thrones," "Troy" and "Gladiator," among others.

TPG tip: The attractive boutique hotel Rosselli, part of Mr & Mrs Smith, gets major points for ambience. It features luscious furnishings, custom floral wallpapers and private two-person saunas in a 17th-century estate. Rates start at $255 or 18,125 World of Hyatt points per night this winter.

Dominica

As the rainy hurricane season ends in November, winter is an excellent time to visit the Caribbean nation of Dominica. Average temperatures at this time of year can hover around 87 or 88 degrees, and the water is similarly warm at 78-80 degrees, perfect for snorkeling and diving.

As a tropical island country, it (obviously) has beaches. But if all you want is somewhere to lie on the sand, Dominica isn't the best fit for you as there's much to see and do. Exploits include spotting the island's colorful birds and sperm whale watching — it boasts the world's first protected Sperm Whale Reserve — to uncovering seemingly endless natural beauty, including lush forests, nine live volcanoes, and numerous waterfalls and hot springs. In Morne Trois Pitons National Park, take a long hike to the natural, steam-spraying 183-degree Boiling Lake. Long-distance walkers will thrive here by embarking on the 112-mile-long Waitukubuli National Trail.

TPG tip: Splurge on the sustainable and exclusive 10-villa boutique resort Secret Bay, with rates for the Mr & Mrs Smith hotel starting at $1,631 or 135,250 World of Hyatt points per night this winter. Or choose InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort & Spa, inside Cabrits National Park, for rates starting at $385 or 84,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

The Algarve, Portugal

Continental Portugal's southernmost region, the Algarve, has something for every traveler. If you want to stay in a hotel and spend a week lounging by the pool without a care, you've got plenty of options along the coastline. If you're after world-class beaches, breathtaking views and nightlife, try Lagos or Albufeira. Want a city break that isn't Lisbon or Porto? Try Faro instead, with its historic Old Town. Does all of the above sound great? It's fairly easy to explore the Algarve, its beaches and charming coastal towns by car.

But just how hot can Portugal be in December? Well, it's similar to Malta, with an average high of 63 degrees in December, with things getting significantly chillier in the evenings at around 47 degrees. It's about the same in January and February. Still, it's one of the warmer places in Europe at this time of year, so while you may not be in a T-shirt 24/7 or full bathing suit mode, you'll have a chance of escaping the U.S.'s colder daytime temperatures, and Portugal is known for having in excess of 300 annual days of sun. You'll also get to avoid the summer crowds.

TPG tip: Conrad Algarve, near Ria Formosa Nature Park and in the golf mecca of Quinta do Lago, offers thoughtful amenities, a lovely spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant, Gusto by Heinz Beck. Rates start at $236 or 68,000 Hilton Honors points per night this winter.

Curacao

Curacao is the "C" in the Caribbean's ABC islands — with the "A" being Aruba and "B" being Bonaire. All three are ideal winter sun destinations, enjoying average high temperatures in the mid-80s throughout December, January and February. Indeed, this is the peak season for travel, but it's well worth it.

You'll find white sandy beaches, clear-as-day water and resort-style hotels in Curacao, but you don't want to miss the chance to go diving or explore the island, which is part of the Netherlands. The influence is visible in the Dutch-inspired architecture of the UNESCO-listed capital, Willemstad, painted in cheerful candy colors and lined with lively cafes. February is a great time to visit, as the annual Carnival takes place that month over changing dates each year, when the island is at its most spirited.

TPG tip: Renaissance Wind Creek Curacao Resort is one of the best-rated resorts in historical Willemstad and has its own infinity pool. Rates start at $290 or 46,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night this winter.

Agadir, Morocco

RAUL C/GETTY IMAGES

Resort city Agadir on Morocco's south coast is a fine option for winter sun. The temperature hovers around an average high of 70 degrees — though the lows are high 40s and low 50s — with the sea staying just warm enough to dip your toes in without yelping (somewhere around 65-ish).

Agadir is known for its long stretch of golden beach (Plage d'Agadir), but it also has local souks to explore, a recreation of an old medina to marvel at, cultural museums to take in and half a dozen golf courses (if that's your thing). You'll also be within close travel distance (30 minutes) to the fishing village of Taghazout, known for its excellent surfing (best for experienced surfers in the winter) and scenic beaches, as well as road-tripping distance (approximately three hours) from the historic port city of Essaouira.

TPG tip: On a soft, sandy beach in the middle of town — equipped with cute thatched umbrellas and plump loungers — the Sofitel Agadir Royal Bay Resort is an attractive Moroccan-styled choice. Rates start at $223 per night this winter. Sofitel hotels are part of the Accor Live Limitless loyalty program, which is free to join.

Iguacu Falls, Brazil

Iguacu Falls. MEKDET/GETTY IMAGES

Expect high temperatures in the region to average 91 degrees (and perhaps the odd rainfall) in Brazil throughout November (the end of spring) and December to February (summer). This makes it an ideal time weatherwise to visit one of the South American country's greatest natural wonders: Iguacu (or Iguazu or Iguassu) Falls.

The gushing falls can be seen from Brazil or Argentina in their respective Iguacu and Iguazu national parks. They are a cloudy, plunging spectacle, stretching across 8,858 feet and dropping 269 feet (at their tallest) into the river below, combining into the world's largest waterfall system. OK, you won't lie on the beach getting a tan, but you will see one of the world's most impressive natural sights. In Brazil's park, which spans more than 457,000 acres, there are opportunities to explore the jungle and, if you're lucky, see the local wildlife, which includes giant anteaters and giant otters.

TPG tip: With a poolside Brazilian grill and spa, the legendary Hotel das Cataratas, a Belmond Hotel, Iguassu Falls is the most epic stay in the park with exclusive access to the falls. Rates start at $883 per night this winter, or book through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts for late checkout and a $100 on-site dining credit, among other perks.

Funchal, Portugal

Funchal, the capital of the autonomous Madeira archipelago, is an easy place to while away a few days. Enjoy a relaxed trip to the farmers market, a stroll around the vibrant Madeira Botanical Garden and the pretty cobbled streets of Zona Vieja, or ride on the Funchal cable car before savoring a long lunch and a spot of wine tasting. Football (soccer for Americans) fans can even visit an entire museum dedicated to the city's superstar son, Cristiano Ronaldo, showcasing some of his many trophies.

Suppose you have more than a few days to spare. In that case, this Portuguese island has plenty more to explore, from its unique walks along miles of levadas (water channels built for irrigation) to Porto Moniz's natural pools and Santana's traditional thatched houses. Often touted as a year-round destination due to its position on the northwest coast of Africa, you can expect to experience decent temperatures from autumn into early winter in Funchal — i.e., an average high of 75 degrees in October, 73 degrees in November and 68 degrees in December. Expect slightly chillier evenings, though, and the odd flash of rain.

TPG tip: The renovated Dreams Madeira Resort, Spa & Marina is half an hour from Funchal and has all the makings of a relaxing sunny holiday. Rates start at $191 or 23,000 World of Hyatt points per night this winter.

Cape Town

V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. PETER ADAMS/GETTY IMAGES

When seeking winter sun, don't forget about the Southern Hemisphere's gems, such as Cape Town, the vibrant city of fewer than 5 million people that seems to have just about everything a person could desire. There are magnificent beaches, some with natural sea pools, others with surfing waves and still others with cute African penguins. Be sure to climb Lion's Head with something to toast at the top at sunset, or take the Aerial Cableway up to iconic Table Mountain.

There are showstopping restaurants and abundant wineries, epic scenic drives and more somber historical sites (Robben Island), places to see wildlife (Cape Point Nature Reserve) and places to geek out over plants (Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden).

You can expect an average high temperature of 77 degrees in December and about 81 degrees in January and February, and just a couple of days of rain, though it's always wise to pack a light layer for when the wind inevitably picks up. And for sunbathers, the city is blessed with fabulous swimming pools, especially in the luxury hotels around the V&A Waterfront.

TPG tip: The iconic Cape Grace — A Fairmont Managed Hotel has location, location, location on its side, but also stunning interiors, artworks, and vibrant restaurant and bar scenes that highlight the best of South African cuisine and concoctions. Rates start at $1,181 per night this winter. Fairmont hotels are part of the Accor Live Limitless loyalty program, which is free to join.

Rajasthan, India

Amer Fort or Amber Fort in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. KRIANGKRAI THITIMAKORN/GETTY IMAGES

It's easy to assume much of India is swelteringly hot all year, but visitors can anticipate incredibly pleasant weather in the wintertime. It's still sunny, of course, but cooler. (Think a January average high of 72 degrees in Rajasthan, with nights dropping to a refreshing 50-ish degrees on average.) The humidity is down, the rain is almost nonexistent (think one day per month), and you can comfortably ride in that open-air electric rickshaw without sweating through your clothes.

Since many of the spectacular highlights — decadent and ancient palaces, forts, temples and historical museums — in Rajasthan's main destinations, including the terra-cotta pink-toned Jaipur, brilliant blue Jodhpur and an artificial lake-filled Udaipur, are not air-conditioned, this is the absolute best time to sightsee. It's also the ideal season for safaris in Ranthambore National Park. The sun brings the wildlife, particularly elusive tigers, out from the brush to bask in it.

TPG tip: Stay in the fairy-tale environs of Six Senses Fort Barwara to immerse in Rajasthani magic — landscapes, design, food, temples, tea — and make time for Ayurvedic treatments in the gorgeous women's palace turned spa. Rates start at $1,083 or 152,000 IHG One Rewards points this winter.

Minimal delays for US airlines after Airbus orders global emergency software fix on A320-family jets

European planemaker Airbus ordered airlines on Friday to perform an immediate software fix on thousands of A320-family jets, addressing a bug that could cause control problems during flights.

In a statement, the planemaker said that analysis of a recent incident had revealed a problem in which "intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls" during solar flares.

The problem was found after a JetBlue A320 flying from Mexico's Cancun International Airport (CUN) to New York's Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) on Oct. 30 experienced a sudden drop in altitude, injuring 15 people.

About 6,000 planes globally are affected, or just over half of the global fleet of the narrow-body jet, which recently overtook Boeing's 737 as the most-delivered commercial airplane in history. U.S. operators currently have 1,622 A320 jets in service, according to data analytics firm Cirium, although not all of them are impacted by the order.

Fortunately for airlines, the fix appears to be quick, involving a software update that takes about two hours.

American Airlines, which is the largest operator of the A320-family, said that 209 of its jets are affected, out of a total in-service fleet of 475 of the type. As of 7 p.m. ET, there were fewer than 150 aircraft still waiting on the fix, according to a spokesperson, with the "overwhelming majority" expected to be completed by Saturday morning.

"Safety will always be our top priority, and we thank our customers for their patience during this unexpected event," the spokesperson said in a statement.

A person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified characterized any expected impact to passenger service to be "minimal."

Delta Air Lines, which has 305 A320-family jets in service, according to Cirium, said that it expects the number of affected planes to stay relatively low, and it had identified fewer than 50 A321neo aircraft that will require the fix. The airline plans to finish installing the software update by Saturday morning, a spokesperson said, and expects any operational impact to be "limited."

United has 201 A320-family jets in service but told TPG that only six planes were affected and it did not expect the issue to affect schedules.

JetBlue, which which flies 220 of the aircraft, did not immediately respond a request for comment.

While the effects on U.S. carriers may be limited, airlines in other parts of the world faced greater impacts. Colombia's Avianca said that more than 70% of its fleet was affected, according to Reuters, leading it to close ticket sales for travel through Dec. 8.

Still, despite what may prove to be a limited impact to the larger U.S. airlines, the issue comes during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, as Americans return home following Thanksgiving.

As always, be sure to check your flight in your airline's app to see the latest status, and keep an eye on TPG for the latest on any travel disruptions caused by this issue.
