Rides, restaurants and ‘epic’ experiences: TPG’s guide to the 5 worlds of Universal Epic Universe

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

It’s been more than six years since Universal Orlando Resort announced its plans to open its third theme park, Universal Epic Universe. With its grand opening just weeks away, here’s everything you need to know about this “epic” new theme park and what you can find in each of its five worlds.

When does Epic Universe open?

Epic Universe’s grand opening is May 22, but you can also visit during a pre-opening park preview period between April 30 and May 19.

Are Epic Universe tickets on sale?

Tickets and vacation packages are on sale now, and prices vary by date. Currently, the least expensive available tickets are for dates in early September. Ticket add-ons — such as Universal Express skip-the-line passes and VIP tours — are also available.

If you want to visit during the pre-opening park preview period, one-day tickets are on sale now. You can also buy a hotel and ticket package that includes a visit to Epic Universe or a park-only ticket with up to four days at Universal’s other parks and a one-day admission to Epic Universe during this preview phase.

Where is Epic Universe?

Epic Universe is on a 750-acre tract of land about 3 miles from the rest of Universal Orlando Resort. The resort provides complimentary shuttle service between Epic Universe (and its hotels) and Universal Orlando’s other parks and hotels.

Inside Epic Universe’s lands and rides

Epic Universe is home to five worlds with more than 50 attractions, as well as entertainment, dining and shopping experiences. Here’s what you can find inside each world.

Stardust Racers is touted as Epic Universe’s most thrilling coaster. This dual-launch coaster can reach speeds of up to 62 mph and heights of up to 133 feet along 5,000 feet of track.

Guests who prefer to go slower can hop aboard the Constellation Carousel, a constellation-themed ride with vehicles that gently glide back and forth and make 360-degree rotations.

When Universal set out to build a fourth park, it wanted to find ways to bring more of the “Harry Potter” universe to life. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic highlights the wizarding era of 1920s Paris featured in the “Fantastic Beasts” films.

The land’s premier attraction is Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, where you will travel via Metro-Floo from Paris to the British Ministry of Magic, hot on the trail of Dolores Umbridge. Upon arriving, however, you will realize that Umbridge has escaped and aims to bring back Lord Voldemort. You’ll join Harry, Ron, Hermione and a house elf named Higgledy on a chase through the ministry to capture Umbridge.

This ride has a minimum height requirement of 40 inches.

After you return to Paris, you can stop into Le Cirque Arcanus for a magical menagerie of live performers, aerialists, puppetry and a few fantastic beast sightings. The show follows Ringmaster Skender, who has stolen Newt Scamander’s suitcase of fantastic beasts to try and save his failing circus. During the show, a circus employee named Gwenlyn attempts to rescue the creatures and return them to their rightful owner.

You can shop for wands at Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique, Paris’ finest wand shop. Each wand comes with a map that shows spots throughout the Wizarding World where you can practice casting spells with your new interactive wand. Some wand spots throughout the land feature familiar fantastic beasts from the films, including Nifflers, Bowtruckles and Demiguise.

As you stroll the streets, you’ll also be able to meet Wizarding World residents and visitors, including Hogwarts exchange students.

There are several dining locations where you can grab a bite to eat. At Cafe L’Air De La Sirene, you can dine on French sandwiches, plats du jour and desserts. At the dark, mysterious Le Gobelet Noir, you’ll find everything from soups and salads to entrees and desserts. At Bar Moonshine, you can sample exclusive beers, wines and cocktails in a sports bar setting honoring the U.S. Quidditch team.

You can also shop for wizarding gear in Les Galeries Mirifiques, pick up some sweet treats at K. Rammelle and stop for Ministry of Magic-inspired items at the Metro-Floo gift shop, Tour En Floo.

Dark Universe

Attending Universal’s annual Halloween Horror Nights is a rite of passage for horror fans. Now, you won’t have to wait for fall to get your fill of all things spooky. The Dark Universe is where you can visit Dracula, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein and other classic monsters all year long.

You enter Dark Universe through an electrified portal that harnesses the land’s dark energy and transports you to Darkmoor Village, where the creatures from Universal Classic Monsters films are real. Here, you can experience two attractions and several dining options. You can even get the chance to be made into a monster yourself.

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is the park’s most terrifying attraction yet, according to Universal. The ride takes you inside Frankenstein Manor, where Dr. Frankenstein’s great-great-granddaughter, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, is conducting a few experiments of her own.

If you dare, you can enter the castle and witness Dr. Frankenstein’s attempts to control the monsters. Dracula, however, isn’t quite on board with her plan and unleashes them. You must then ride through the castle’s catacombs to avoid the angry monsters.

In a behind-the-scenes video, Universal said Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment uses some of the most technologically advanced animatronic figures to make the ride even more realistic and scary.

This ride has a minimum height requirement of 48 inches.

Curse of the Werewolf is a spinning, family-friendly coaster inspired by “The Wolf Man” (1941). After learning they bear the mark of the werewolf, riders must board a wagon to escape the werewolves who inhabit the forest and avoid becoming one themselves. This ride has a minimum height requirement of 40 inches.

At Dark Universe, you have the chance to become a monster yourself. At the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, guests of all ages can get a monster makeover using face paint and temporary tattoos. You can complete your look with merchandise and memorabilia from Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities gift shop.

There are also several meet-and-greet opportunities throughout Dark Universe. As you explore Darkmoor Village, you may run into characters such as Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, the Invisible Man and monster hunters, among others.

All that screaming and running around can make you hungry, but thankfully, there are several dining options in Dark Universe. Das Stakehaus is a sit-down restaurant run by vampire “familiars,” with a menu featuring kebabs, burgers, sandwiches and more.

The Burning Blade Tavern is a quick-service restaurant modeled after the iconic burning windmill seen in “Frankenstein.” In Dark Universe, the town’s monster hunters have since taken over the mill and transformed it into a hangout to display the “trophies” of the monsters they’ve bested. You can dine on German-inspired bar bites like burgers, bratwurst, pretzels and specialty beverages.

You also have the option to swing by De Lacey’s Cottage food stand, which sells grab-and-go treats like ice cream and cinnamon bread.

Super Nintendo World

Super Nintendo World immerses guests in the colorful adventures of favorite Nintendo heroes like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Donkey Kong, as well as not-so-favorite villains like Bowser and his minions.

You enter the world through a green warp pipe. Inside Super Nintendo World, there are two separate lands: Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country. Both areas immerse visitors into these beloved video games’ vibrant, animated worlds with interactive elements, character meet-and-greet attractions, and more.

Super Mario Land houses two attractions — Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge and Yoshi’s Adventure. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is an interactive, multisensory ride that utilizes physical set pieces and projection mapping technology to put you behind the wheel in a high-stakes Mario Kart race.

Just as in the Mario Kart games you play at home, you can race through courses, collect coins and throw turtle shells to beat Team Bowser. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is inside Bowser’s Castle, and the queue experience is almost as exciting as the ride itself.

You must be 42 inches tall to ride Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, or 48 inches tall to ride without a supervising adult.

Yoshi’s Adventure is a slow-moving, family-friendly ride where you ride with Yoshis, searching for colorful, glowing eggs hidden throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. Along the way, you’ll get breathtaking views of the land, and you may even spot a few familiar characters. Yoshi’s Adventure has a minimum height requirement of 36 inches; you can ride without a supervising companion if you’re at least 48 inches tall.

During your time in Super Mario Land, you can also dine on Nintendo-themed dishes at Toadstool Cafe, get an energy boost with snacks and treats from Yoshi’s Snack Island and Turbo Boost Treats, or shop for souvenirs at the 1-UP Factory or Mario Motors. You can also meet Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad in various places throughout Super Nintendo World.

The entrance to Donkey Kong Country is toward the back of the park. This area is designed to resemble the tropical jungle landscape depicted in Donkey Kong video games. Donkey Kong Country will also have its own dining and merchandise inspired by the video game franchise.

In Donkey Kong Country, visitors can ride the family-friendly attraction, Mine-Cart Madness. This coaster sends you careening through the jungle on a mission to help Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong protect the prized golden banana. Mine-Cart Madness utilizes innovative technology and a one-of-a-kind ride system to mimic the maneuvers in the video game and simulate experiences like getting blasted out of a barrel and jumping over gaps in the track.

You must be 36 inches tall to ride Mine-Cart Madness or 48 inches tall without a supervising adult.

Super Nintendo World is more than just a place to see characters and ride attractions based on classic Nintendo games. It also functions like a real-life video game where you are the main character.

In Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country, you can collect digital coins, stamps and keys by riding the attractions, punching question blocks and playing interactive “key challenges.” Earn enough keys, and you can face off against Bowser Jr. in an ultimate boss battle.

Power-Up Band. TARAH CHIEFFI/THE POINTS GUY

You’ll need to purchase a Power-Up Band to earn coins and stamps, compete in key challenges, and keep track of your score within the land. You don’t need a Power-Up Band to enjoy Super Nintendo World, but it is worth the money to fully experience it. Competing with your friends and family is also fun to see who can get the highest score.

Adjacent to Epic Universe, Universal Stella Nova Resort and Universal Terra Luna Resort each have 750 guest rooms. They also have outdoor pools and quick-service dining options similar to those of Universal’s other Prime Value category hotels, like Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Rates start around $147 per night for stays of four nights or longer at both properties.

The third hotel, Universal Helios Grand Hotel, is inside Epic Universe at the back end of Celestial Park. This luxury property has its own entrance to Epic Universe with a much shorter security line than the main gate.

Universal Helios Grand Hotel has 500 guest rooms and one-of-a-kind views of the new park. According to a press release, the hotel’s theme is “designed to transport guests to a world where the heavens and earth unite.” Rates start at $293 per night for stays of four nights or longer.

Bottom line

It’s hard to describe Universal Epic Universe without saying it’s … epic. While many theme parks have immersive lands and attractions, we have yet to see a theme park of this scale with this groundbreaking level of detail and immersion.

How many business credit cards should you have?

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

The best business credit cards offer a variety of perks and attractive earning rates that can benefit many types of businesses. However, some business owners will need more than one card. They may want access to higher spending limits or wish to spread their purchases across different cards based on bonus categories.

In any case, having more than one business card can give your business the purchasing power it needs while using each card’s unique perks to maximize savings and rewards.

In this article, we’ll explore when it makes sense to hold more than one business credit card and the benefits multiple cards can offer your small business.

Should a business have multiple credit cards?

When it comes to deciding on the number of credit cards you should have, business owners can take the same approach as personal cardholders and use more than one credit card. This helps to increase purchasing power, build credit and increase rewards.

By having more than one card, a business can increase its purchasing power with a higher overall credit limit. Having only one credit card can limit a business’s access to credit.

For example, a business owner with a limit of $15,000 on an Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (see rates and fees) may run into trouble if they need to spend $10,000 on business expenses in one month.

In this situation, it would benefit the business to have more than one card so their purchasing power isn’t restricted to the remaining $5,000 and their company can operate smoothly.

It also makes sense to have multiple business cards if your business routinely spends in categories that your current card doesn’t cover. You don’t want to leave rewards on the table, especially if you’re spending thousands in a particular category every month.

On the other hand, having multiple credit cards can complicate spending tracking and, in some cases, raise your business’s annual expenses.

Let’s dive deeper into the benefits of having multiple business cards, as well as some things to keep in mind.

Related: Business credit cards: What they are and how they work

Benefits of multiple business credit cards

Carrying more than one business card has many benefits. Like we mentioned above, it enables your business to earn rewards in multiple common spending categories, helping offset expenses.

Like personal cards, business cards can earn cash back, miles or points. For example, the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card (see rates and fees) offers 1.5% cash back on all purchases.

Additionally, businesses that spend on travel can earn 5 points per dollar on airfare and prepaid hotels booked on AmexTravel.com with The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. You can also gain valuable statement credits when you purchase at select merchants, such as Dell in the U.S., Adobe and Indeed (enrollment required; terms apply; Adobe credit is subject to auto-renewal; select benefits changing July 1).

You’ll get up to $400 each calendar year in Dell credits for U.S. purchases, up to $360 back every calendar year for Indeed and up to $150 back every calendar year for Adobe purchases.

These cards can help businesses cover some annual costs, bringing tangible value to business owners.

MORSA IMAGES/GETTY IMAGES

Since having multiple cards open at once increases your overall available credit, your business can more easily maintain a lower credit utilization ratio, which is good for building business credit over the long term.

Business credit scores work differently from personal credit scores, but the core concept is the same: A higher business credit score can result in access to better rates on business loans or business lines of credit from banks.

Things to consider before applying for multiple business credit cards

Before you apply for additional business cards, here are a few things to consider.

Annual fee

Depending on which business cards you have applied for, they may or may not have an annual fee. Having multiple business cards could become costly if you’re paying an annual fee on more than one card.

For example, the aforementioned Amex Business Platinum has an annual fee of $695 (see rates and fees). If a business adds other cards to the mix, it can quickly increase expenses.

PORTA/GETTY MAGES

Benefit utilization

Business credit cards have their respective benefits and perks, whether it be bonus cash-back categories, statement credits or travel benefits like lounge access. If your business won’t use the majority of a card’s benefits, it may not be worth paying the annual fee.

On-time payments

Most business credit cards have flexible repayment terms that allow you to carry over a balance from month to month, but that involves making minimum monthly payments. As a business owner, if you have two, three or more business credit cards, you need to decide if you’re in a position to make minimum payments on multiple cards each billing cycle.

If minimum payments are not made on time, you may incur late fees and a negative hit to your credit report. Remember that every card you carry a balance on will continue to accrue interest, increasing your business expenses and eating into your rewards earnings.

Related: The best way to pay your credit card bills

How many business credit cards should you apply for?

While there is no limit on the number of business cards you can apply for, it’s important to note that every submitted application will result in a hard inquiry on your credit report. Not only can this lower your personal credit score, but it can also decrease your business credit score.

Woman using a laptop at home
10’000 HOURS/GETTY IMAGES

Before applying for additional cards, consider which ones best fit your spending habits, what benefits will help your business, the APR rates and whether your company can manage multiple credit cards.

Bottom line

The number of business credit cards you should carry depends on your business’s needs and how you will use the various perks and benefits that business credit cards offer. While only having one card sounds simple, multiple cards can increase a business’s purchasing power and open up the possibility for more flexible rewards.

Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer bonus

Costa Irminia Retreat & Spa, Vignette Collection. IHG HOTELS & RESORTS

Chase is currently offering a 25% bonus when transferring Ultimate Rewards points to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club through June 15. This means that for every 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points you transfer, you’ll get 1,250 Flying Club points.

Though Virgin Atlantic has shifted to dynamic pricing, the airline’s saver award seats start at just 6,000 points in economy one-way. So, if you find a saver fare award ticket from New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) and use Chase’s bonus, you’ll only need to transfer 5,000 Ultimate Rewards points.

If you find a saver lie-flat business-class seat on the same route, instead of paying 29,000 Flying Club points, with the 25% bonus, you’ll need to transfer 24,000 Chase points.

Though this isn’t the biggest transfer bonus we’ve seen between Chase and Virgin Atlantic — a 40% transfer bonus was offered in October 2024 — it’s still a great deal to help you save your hard-earned Ultimate Rewards points.

Aside from Flying Club, Chase is also offering a 25% transfer bonus to Air France-KLM Flying Blue through May 31. For every 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points you transfer, you’ll receive 1,250 Flying Blue miles. While Flying Blue uses a dynamic pricing model, the loyalty program has standardized saver-level pricing on one-way flights between the U.S. and Europe.

A saver-level ticket costs 25,000 miles in economy, 40,000 miles in premium economy and 60,000 miles in business class. If you use this Chase transfer bonus and find saver award availability, you’ll only need to transfer 20,000 Chase points for economy, 32,000 points for premium economy or 48,000 points for business class.

Plus, each month, Flying Blue offers discounted award tickets on select routes. For the month of May, the loyalty program is offering 25% off long-haul economy routes between the following U.S. cities and Europe: Atlanta, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Miami, Boston, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C. So, you can find one-way economy flights starting at 18,750 Flying Blue miles.

If you combine Flying Blue’s Promo Rewards and the Chase transfer bonus, you can book a one-way economy flight to Europe by transferring just 15,000 Ultimate Rewards points.

As always, before transferring any points, make sure you find award availability since point transfers are irreversible.

Should you transfer points and miles?

We only recommend transferring points or miles if you have a short-term plan to use them. Many programs have implemented devaluations over the last few years, so speculative transfers could prove a losing proposition. Transfers are irreversible, and you don’t want to be stuck with thousands of points or miles in a program you have little use for.

If you don’t have a specific redemption in mind but still want to earn points or miles, you’re likely better off earning rewards through card welcome bonuses and everyday spending.

And we always recommend you ensure award availability before transferring your rewards.

Bottom line

When a program with a transferable currency offers a transfer bonus, it’s important to run the numbers to determine whether it is worthwhile.

Generally, you won’t want to transfer your points or miles without a specific redemption in mind. After all, a large part of the value of transferable points and miles comes from their flexibility, which you’ll give up when you convert them to a partner’s currency. However, a transfer bonus can help you get more value from your points and miles if you use a partner program frequently or plan to redeem soon.

If I’m an authorized user on a Chase Sapphire card, can I get the Sapphire Preferred?

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

In case you haven’t heard, one of TPG’s favorite rewards cards on the market is running one of the best deals we’ve ever seen.

That’s right — the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees) is offering new cardholders a staggering 100,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

TPG’s April 2025 valuations place this bonus at $2,050, which is a stellar return we haven’t seen in more than three years. With the long list of redemption options you could unlock with these points, you don’t want to miss your chance to earn this offer.

But if you’ve been an authorized user on someone else’s Sapphire card and haven’t opened your own Sapphire Preferred or premium Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees) account, you may wonder if you’re eligible for this welcome offer.

If this sounds like your circumstance, we have the answer for you. Let’s walk through how to navigate this situation so you can snag those 100,000 valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points for yourself.

Can I open the Sapphire Preferred if I’m an authorized user on a Chase Sapphire card?

The short answer is yes.

You do not open your own individual line of credit when you’re added as an authorized user on a card. The primary cardholder is the only one who owns the credit associated with the account.

So, in the eyes of the issuer, this is the only person who technically “has” the card. Because of this, you do not “have” the card and are eligible to get your own.

Woman using a laptop
MILJAN ŽIVKOVIĆ/GETTY IMAGES

You don’t have to remove yourself as an authorized user to receive your own card, either. This can be an important consideration, since your credit score could be affected if you remove yourself from a long-standing account that anchors the average age of your accounts.

If you run into any problems with your application after being an authorized user on someone else’s card, it’s worth calling Chase’s reconsideration line to explain your situation to a customer service representative.

However, there are some restrictions to note when it comes to applying for any Chase card. Plus, some other stipulations exist around Sapphire cards specifically. Let’s examine these application rules to see if they could affect your application.

Related: As an authorized user, can I open my own account for the same card?

Sapphire Preferred application rules

Chase has a short list of nuanced application rules that may cause you to miss out on its incredible 100,000-point welcome offer if you don’t follow them.

Two rules affect Chase Sapphire products:

Chase’s 5/24 rule

The infamous Chase 5/24 rule restricts anyone who has opened five or more personal credit cards in the last 24 months from being approved for a new Chase card.

With the exception of some business cards, every card you’ve successfully applied for in the last 24 months counts against this rule. You have to be below 5/24 to be approved for a card from Chase.

Man makes a phone call while trying to make an online purchase using a credit card and a laptop
KOSAMTU/GETTY IMAGES

Authorized user cards (if they’ve been opened in the last 24 months) generally count against your 5/24 status, even though you aren’t the primary cardholder.

If you’re denied a Chase card for this reason, there could be an easy way out. If you call the reconsideration line and explain the situation, a Chase representative may not count a card you’re an authorized user on toward your 5/24 standing. However, this does not guarantee you’ll be approved.

Chase Sapphire rule

The Sapphire Preferred‘s application page is clear with this rule:

This product is available to you if you do not have any Sapphire card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for any Sapphire card in the past 48 months.

Remember that authorized users are not considered primary cardmembers, so this rule won’t apply to you. As long as you’re only an authorized user and you don’t have your own Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve or no-annual-fee Chase Sapphire Card (no longer open to new applications), you’re in the clear.

The information for the Chase Sapphire Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Related: The ultimate guide to credit card application restrictions

Am I eligible for the Sapphire Preferred’s 100,000-point welcome bonus?

You can receive the bonus on the Sapphire Preferred if you haven’t received a bonus on either Sapphire card in the past 48 months. Again, if you’re simply the authorized user on someone else’s card, you haven’t earned the points as the primary cardmember, so you’d be eligible.

a woman holds a wallet with many credit cards
ISABELLE RAPHAEL/THE POINTS GUY

However, as we’ve said, if you’ve previously held your own Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve and earned a welcome bonus within the past 48 months, you won’t be eligible to receive this current bonus. Note this date is 48 months from when you received the bonus, not from when you applied for the card.

Related: Who’s eligible for the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s 100,000-point bonus?

Bottom line

With an offer as solid as the current 100,000-point bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred, it’s understandable why you’d want to ensure your eligibility.

But, if you’re an authorized user, don’t have your own Sapphire card and haven’t earned a bonus on a Sapphire card in 48 months, you’ll only need to be concerned with your 5/24 standing, which is a consideration for anyone applying for a new Chase card.

Remember that if you are rejected, you can always call Chase’s reconsideration line to make your case for why you should be approved.

Best ways to redeem British Airways Avios: From flights to Hawaii to island hopping in the Caribbean

British Airways is the largest full-service airline in the United Kingdom and flies to more destinations in the United States than any other European carrier.

The airline’s loyalty program, British Airways Club, uses Avios as its currency.

With a substantial U.S. route network, excellent airline partners and a loyalty currency that is easy to earn and redeem, British Airways Club should be on your radar, even if you aren’t traveling to the U.K. Unlike major U.S. loyalty programs, British Airways Club does not operate using dynamic pricing, and there are discounts for off-peak travel dates.

Highest-ever offer — Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees): Earn 100,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Here are the best ways to redeem British Airways Avios.

Related: 5 reasons why you should care about British Airways Avios

Book short-haul flights in Europe using Avios

British Airways A320 economy cabin
BEN SMITHSON/THE POINTS GUY

Short-haul tickets flying on British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus are arguably the best British Airways Avios redemptions. They start at just 4,750 Avios plus 17.50 British pounds (about $23) for an off-peak award flight that’s 650 miles or less in distance. One example would be a flight between London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), which can regularly cost over $100 if purchased as a cash fare.

Partner awards, including those operated by Cathay Pacific, Qantas and Japan Airlines, start at 6,000 Avios but exclude flights within North America.

Thanks to British Airways’ Reward Flight Saver offer, British Airways Club members also have the option to choose to pay more Avios to reduce the (already reasonable) taxes and fees.

Use Avios to island hop through the Caribbean

Beachfront at Sandals Grande Antigua
SANDALS GRANDE ANTIGUA/SANDALS

Here is a neat trick to experiencing more of the Caribbean once you are there.

While flights between islands in this region can be expensive, British Airways operates several fifth-freedom routes where, for example, a British Airways flight originating in London will fly from Antigua’s V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU) to St. Kitts’ Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) several times per week.

You can book just the short hop between the islands, and British Airways prices these short flights like its European short-haul flights. Using the Reward Flight Saver offer, redemptions start from just 4,750 Avios each way plus 17.50 British pounds (about $23) on off-peak dates. Award availability is usually outstanding in all classes on these fifth-freedom flights, as many passengers disembark at the first stop, leaving plenty of empty seats for the second, short leg.

If you can’t decide between two islands in this beautiful part of the world, consider using Avios to cheaply hop between them.

Book domestic business class on American Airlines using Avios

American Airlines 787
ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Although American Airlines calls its domestic premium-class cabin “first class,” you can redeem Avios for this product at business-class-level rates.

The real kicker is that American Airlines regularly flies internationally configured wide-body aircraft, including Boeing 777s and 787s, on domestic routes. For example, American’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner operates some flights between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Miami International Airport (MIA), a 1,013-mile journey.

You could book a business-class award on this flight for only 32,000 Avios and $5.60 in fees and taxes. That’s a decent deal for a proper lie-flat bed.

Pay for West Coast flights to Hawaii using Avios

Alaska Airlines planes
ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Since we’re on the subject of American Airlines, another sweet spot with Avios is the ability to fly from major West Coast cities to the Hawaiian Islands for just 20,000 Avios each way, thanks to the Avios distance-based chart. That beats the award rate for many U.S. airline programs.

But in this case, it’s not just American’s route network that’s included. Alaska Airlines is also a British Airways partner, which means you have access to the carrier’s flights to Hawaii, though you’ll need to call to book Alaska flights with Avios since they aren’t searchable on the British Airways website. That opens up routes that American doesn’t serve but Alaska does, such as San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) in California to Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) in Kona, Hawaii, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).

So, if you live almost anywhere on the West Coast — or can easily position yourself there — Avios can be your friend to Hawaii.

Book Aer Lingus with Avios at off-peak prices

An Aer Lingus A330 takes off from Nw York JFK
ALBERTO RIVA/THE POINTS GUY

If you can travel during off-peak dates (which cover roughly eight months of the year), you can fly to Dublin from a handful of U.S. cities, including ones as far west as Chicago. This award will set you back just 26,000 Avios round-trip in economy or as few as 50,000 Avios one-way in business class.

Suppose you live in the South in a city like Orlando or Miami, or on the West Coast in Los Angeles or San Francisco. In either of those cases, the prices would only increase to 32,500 Avios round-trip in economy and 62,500 Avios one-way in business class. Those are still great deals, considering how long these flights are.

You won’t be charged fuel surcharges when redeeming British Airways Avios for Aer Lingus flights.

Reserve Iberia business-class seats to Spain using Avios

Iberia A350 business class
BEN SMITHSON/THE POINTS GUY

You can book Iberia flights between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) or Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C., to Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) for just 34,000 Avios each way in business class on off-peak dates, plus modest taxes and fees.

This remains one of the best sweet spots of any loyalty program and an incredible price to Europe.

While flights from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to MAD are slightly outside this distance range, they also price at 34,000 Avios one-way in business class, which is an excellent deal.

How to earn Avios

ARTISTGNDPHOTOGRAPHY/GETTY IMAGES

Applying for the British Airways Visa Signature® Card (see rates and fees) is an easy way to earn a meaningful number of Avios for everyday spending.

This card allows new applicants to earn 85,000 Avios after spending $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. Per our April 2025 valuations, TPG values Avios at 1.4 cents each, making the full bonus worth $1,190.

The British Airways Visa Signature has a $95 annual fee and earns 3 Avios per dollar spent on purchases with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Level. Plus, you can earn 2 Avios per dollar spent on hotel accommodations booked directly with the hotel. All other purchases earn 1 Avios per dollar spent.

Remember that Avios can be transferred at a 1:1 rate between the different programs that use this currency.

Because Avios partners with many transferable credit card currencies, the following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses that you could easily convert to Avios:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card: Earn 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express: Earn 150,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $20,000 on purchases in the first three months of card membership. Plus, earn a $500 statement credit after spending $2,500 on qualifying flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel with the card within the first three months of card membership. You can earn one or both of these offers.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express: Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $8,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership.
  • American Express® Gold Card: Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $6,000 on eligible purchases in the first six months of card membership.
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card: Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Bottom line

You may wonder why we didn’t mention using Avios for transatlantic flights on British Airways metal or redeeming Avios for nonflight redemptions such as hotels and cars. Since British Airways tacks on large surcharges to its award tickets, using Avios for transatlantic flights on the carrier isn’t the best way to maximize this currency.

Similarly, you will not get outsize value by redeeming your Avios for hotel stays and car rentals.

Now that you know the best uses, you can get terrific value from your Avios regardless of whether you prefer flying in economy or premium classes.

How to maximize the British Airways Travel Together Ticket

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Airline credit cards typically offer standard benefits, like bonus miles on airfare purchases, free checked bags and priority boarding. But one of the most valuable perks any airline credit card can offer is a companion ticket that can cut your cost of travel in half.

Thanks to its high welcome bonuses, earning structure and airfare discounts, the British Airways Visa Signature® Card (see rates and fees) has long been considered one of the best credit cards from a foreign airline offered in the U.S., especially considering British Airways’ expansive U.S. route network. It also comes with one of the most interesting companion travel benefits: the Travel Together Ticket.

The rules around redeeming this perk have recently improved, and it is now easier to use and more valuable than ever.

Here are the details on this companion deal and how to maximize it.

How to earn the British Airways Travel Together Ticket

U.S.-based British Airways Visa Signature® Card cardholders who spend $30,000 on their card in a calendar year can earn a Travel Together Ticket (posted within four to six weeks). The voucher is valid for outbound travel up to 24 months from the issue date (though the return flight can be after that).

THE POINTS GUY

For a limited time, the British Airways Visa Signature Card offers 85,000 Avios after spending $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. Based on TPG’s April 2025 valuations, this is worth $1,190.

Card benefits include a 10% discount when flying on British Airways flights originating in the U.S. and up to $600 in statement credits for award flight taxes and fees every year. You’ll also earn 3 Avios per $1 spent with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Level, 2 Avios per dollar on hotels booked direct and 1 Avios per $1 spent on all other purchases. The card holds a $95 annual fee.

Only the main cardholder with a registered address in the U.S. is eligible to earn the Travel Together Ticket; additional cardholders are not. The cardholder can only earn one voucher each calendar year, even if the cardholder spends more than $30,000 on the card.

Rules for redeeming The Travel Together Ticket

When it’s time to redeem, the Travel Together Ticket comes with several conditions worth considering — some of which are positive and some negative.

Previously, you could only apply these vouchers to award bookings using British Airways Avios and on British Airways-operated flights. However, this rule has recently been relaxed. Now, you can redeem vouchers on flights operated by Aer Lingus and Iberia, including subsidiaries and franchise partners. Note that you must still book your flight(s) through British Airways Club.

British Airways 777 Club Suite
BEN SMITHSON/THE POINTS GUY

The Travel Together Ticket differs from other companion tickets, which are more like a two-for-one paid deal. In this case, you’re getting a two-for-one award redemption but are still responsible for the taxes and other carrier-imposed charges on your ticket (which can be substantial). This also means you have to find two awards open on the same itinerary in the same cabin. If you wish to travel in first class, two award seats on the same flight can be tough to come by.

For solo travel, you can redeem it for 50% of the Avios required for one passenger, which is a handy perk if you would rather travel alone and save Avios.

Previously, you could only use the voucher on round-trip itineraries originating in the U.S. However, this rule has also recently been relaxed, so voucher holders can now commence their itinerary anywhere in the world that British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus operates or their selected subsidiaries fly from (provided there is Avios availability).

A British Airways plane at the gate
ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Your companion must be in the same cabin on your itinerary (unless you redeem it for solo travel). So, if you book a business-class award for yourself, you must find a second one for your companion on the same itinerary. Stopovers are allowed.

Though the terms are not explicit, you should plan to have your card open and in good standing when you want to use your Travel Together Ticket.

Related: How to avoid paying fuel surcharges when redeeming points and miles

When it makes sense to redeem the Travel Together Ticket

Now we come to the real question: Is it worth using the Travel Together Ticket? The answer depends on how you plan to redeem it.

British Airways awards are notorious for high taxes and surcharges on flights through London. While this generally makes economy awards a bad value, it can still be worth paying less than $2,000 per person to fly in business or first class as part of an award ticket; this is especially true when compared to shelling out the cash fare, which could be many thousands of dollars, with premium fares across the Atlantic as high as they currently are.

British Airways World Traveller Plus cabin
BECKY BLAINE/THE POINTS GUY

BA introduced an option called Reward Flight Saver to use more Avios to reduce the cost of the taxes and surcharges on Avios redemptions.

British Airways award availability between the U.S. and Europe tends to be much better than what the U.S. and other European carriers make available. So if you want to book an award, your chances of finding it are good.

The other key benefit is that British Airways has retained an award chart, so you can be confident of how many Avios you will need on any day — no 400,000 points per flight pricing with this program.

Related: Dynamic pricing vs. fuel surcharges — which is the lesser of two evils for your next redemption?

Now, let’s look at four scenarios and compare the cost of using the Travel Together Ticket compared to purchasing airfare to determine whether this is a good deal.

To make things simpler, we’ll search for a single route from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Heathrow Airport (LHR) over a single set of dates in November; award availability was open across all four cabins offered by BA on these flights (and these are off-peak dates). The taxes and fees are typical examples of what you would expect to pay — both for two people traveling together and solo travelers — given the ticket can also be redeemed for solo travel.

First up, economy. A round-trip award on this itinerary for two people using the lowest surcharge Reward Flight Saver option would cost 120,000 Avios plus 300 British pounds ($393) in taxes and fees.

British Airways award redemptions
BRITISH AIRWAYS

If you were using this as a Travel Together Ticket, you’d you’d be paying 60,000 Avios plus $393 for two tickets. This is because you would only be charged the Avios for one passenger but the fees, taxes and surcharges for both. Compare that to the regular economy fare on the same dates of around $1,000 per person for nonstop flights, and this would be a great way to use Avios to save hundreds of dollars.

If you are a solo traveler, you can redeem the Travel Together Ticket for 30,000 Avios plus $196 in fees, taxes and surcharges — saving over $800 on the cash fares for the same flight.

Related: A review of British Airways World Traveller economy on the Airbus A380 from London to Miami

Now for premium economy. Here’s a sample award from the same week that would cost 190,000 Avios plus 660 British pounds ($864) for two passengers.

British Airways award redemptions
BRITISH AIRWAYS

A paid fare on the same dates would be $1,813 per person, so $3,626 for two passengers. With a Travel Together Ticket for two passengers, you would pay 95,000 Avios plus $864, saving you thousands off the cash ticket.

Solo travelers could redeem 45,000 Avios and pay $432 in taxes and surcharges — another excellent way to save big on the $1,813 cash fare.

Related: Is British Airways premium economy worth it on the Boeing 777-300ER?

In business class, British Airways will charge 360,000 Avios plus 900 British pounds ($1,179) in taxes and surcharges for two passengers at the Reward Flight Saver rate.

British Airways award redemption screenshot
BRITISH AIRWAYS

With the 50% reduction in Avios with the Travel Together Ticker, you would still be charged a huge 180,000 Avios plus the full $1,179 co-payment. However, with cash fares on these dates close to $4,000 each round-trip in business class, you would still save thousands of dollars using the voucher.

For solo travelers, just 90,000 Avios plus under $600 in taxes and fees saves versus $4,000 for a cash ticket is a great deal.

Reward Flight Savers are not offered in first class, so while you’ll need marginally more Avios than the business class rates above, you must pay the full fees, taxes and surcharges. For two passengers using a Travel Together Ticket, this would be 170,000 Avios round-trip plus an eye-watering 3,263 British pounds ($4,279).

British Airways award redemption screenshot
BRITISH AIRWAYS

This would represent a decent saving on the cash fares of almost $6,000 per person. However, given the thousands of dollars of surcharges you must pay for a first-class redemption, using the voucher for business class instead would be a much better deal.

The following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses that you could easily convert to Avios:

Bottom line

The British Airways Signature Card Together Ticket can save you thousands of dollars on British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus flights from anywhere in the world; it allows two passengers to travel together in any cabin with award availability and only pay the Avios required for one passenger. The spending requirement to earn the perk is high, though.

Reward Flight Saver allows passengers to reduce the notorious BA carrier-imposed surcharges by paying more Avios; this voucher is a valuable credit card perk for economy, premium economy and business-class flights.

Finally: American receives first Boeing 787 Dreamliners that will sport new Flagship Business suites

American Airlines is one step closer to debuting its nicest business-class seats yet.

This week, the Fort Worth-based carrier took delivery of two brand-new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners that will boast its new Flagship Suite Preferred seats — an all-new premium concept that’s been years in the making.

With sliding privacy doors, a chaise lounge option and an overall reimagined take on business class, American’s new Dreamliners will usher in a new era of sorts for the carrier’s premium offerings — and should prove to be one of the most enticing options yet for travelers hoping to redeem AAdvantage miles on American-operated flights.

One of American’s first two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners that will sport the new premium-heavy configuration, shortly after delivery April 29 in Dallas. AMERICAN AIRLINES

American’s two new 787s touched down over the course of roughly three hours Tuesday evening at the carrier’s Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) home base — one from Charleston, South Carolina, and another from Paine Field outside Seattle.

They’ll enter service soon, though American isn’t offering an exact date just yet.

A highly anticipated debut

These Dreamliners have been much anticipated, ever since American first unveiled the business-class suites — and an overall cabin refresh to boot — in renderings shared nearly three years ago.

Delays at Boeing in recent years pushed back the delivery of these new jets and, in the process, the debut of the new premium concept. But now, customers should see them in service very soon.

American’s new 787-9Ps

On top of an all-new type of business-class seat, American’s new 787-9s will offer more of the seats — these aircraft, with a new premium-heavy configuration, are known around the airline’s headquarters as the 787-9Ps.

For comparison, the 787-9s American is currently flying offer 30 business-class pods and 21 premium economy recliners.

The new jets will sport 51 business-class suites, arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration and with universal direct aisle access.

These jets will also have 32 all-new premium economy recliners.

AMERICAN AIRLINES

American’s premium economy recliners — along with all the seats on its new planes — will sport all-new custom designs, along with branding and a new aesthetic you’ll see throughout the cabin.

AMERICAN AIRLINES

“These deliveries, along with the planned refresh of existing seats, are expected to grow American’s lie-flat and premium economy seating by approximately 50% by the end of the decade,” CEO Robert Isom told analysts last week on the company’s first-quarter earnings call.

Exactly where will they fly?

American hasn’t announced the first set of routes for its first 787-9Ps. But the carrier’s top network planner, Brian Znotins, told me last fall that American’s flights from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) seemed a likely bet.

Flagship Business coming to other planes, too

These Dreamliners (and future 787-9 deliveries) aren’t the only jets that will see the new business-class concept.

American is planning to retrofit its Boeing 777-300ERs with the new seats, too — a change that will spell the end for its Flagship First cabin.

Also getting the Flagship Business suites: its long-haul-capable Airbus A321XLRs, which will also boast a true premium economy cabin. Those jets will debut on premium transcontinental routes, replacing jets currently flying with American’s four-cabin A321T configuration.

Eventually, the XLRs should also appear on transatlantic (and other international) routes. However, Isom suggested last week that the XLRs may not enter service until late 2025.
