Chase Sapphire Reserve review: A premium card for power travelers

I've carried either the Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees) or its mid-tier sibling in my wallet for a decade — and the Reserve continues to anchor my travel strategy.

It's one of the strongest travel rewards cards on the market thanks to high-value Chase Ultimate Rewards points, a large suite of statement credits and best-in-class travel protections. If you're willing to put in a little effort to maximize its perks, this card can easily deliver outsize value year after year. Card rating*: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

*Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

Chase Sapphire Reserve: The basics

The Sapphire Reserve is Chase's premium travel card. It earns valuable, transferable Ultimate Rewards points, which are my go-to currency for high-end hotels and business-class flights.

The annual fee is steep at $795, but the value can far outweigh the cost if you use even a couple of the card's statement credits. I recoup this fee through the $300 annual travel credit and up to $500 in hotel credits — and everything else the card offers feels like added value.

I rely on the Sapphire Reserve for the perks I use constantly: airport lounge access when I'm traveling, hotel benefits that make stays smoother and travel insurance that has come through for me more than once.

The Sapphire Reserve is a flexible, premium rewards card designed for people who want to be hands-on with their travel strategy — it's not a passive, "set-it-and-forget-it" product.

Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits

The Sapphire Reserve's value largely hinges on its extensive set of travel and lifestyle benefits, which can offset the annual fee if you use them regularly.

Annual travel credit

The Sapphire Reserve's $300 annual travel credit is one of the easiest credits to use across any premium card. Chase codes nearly every travel-related expense as eligible — from flights and hotels to car rentals, train tickets and tolls.

This perk alone drops the card's effective annual fee to $495. I trigger it organically within the first month of each cardholder year, usually with a single flight or a hotel booking. This year, it automatically covered the first $300 of public transit and ride-hailing purchases I made on a five-week summer trip through Europe.

The Edit hotel credits

The other most valuable credit on this card is up to $500 per year in credits for The Edit, Chase's curated hotel booking platform. Cardholders receive two up-to-$250 credits per year for stays of two nights or more. (In 2025, they're split across the first and second halves of the year, but starting in 2026, you'll have the flexibility to use them anytime.)

Beach chairs at a hotel resort
IHG HOTEL & RESORTS

Here's what I personally value with this perk:

  • Many major hotel brands, including Hyatt and Marriott, participate.
  • You can stack the credit with points redemptions through Chase's travel portal.
  • You still earn hotel elite night credits and loyalty points because these bookings count as qualifying stays.

If you use both the hotel credits and the travel credit, you'll easily justify the Sapphire Reserve's annual fee.

Lifestyle and subscription credits

The card comes with several other recurring credits that are useful if they match your spending patterns:

  • Up to $300 per year via OpenTable: Valid for dining at Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables restaurants; no prepayment, payment or reservation through OpenTable is required (split into two up-to-$150 biannual credits).
  • Up to $300 per year with DoorDash: Up to $25 in monthly promos plus at least one complimentary year of DashPass (activate by Dec. 31, 2027). TPG credit cards writer Chris Nelson saves at least $15 monthly in delivery fees by leveraging this benefit.
  • Up to $300 per year with StubHub/Viagogo: I attend enough concerts and sporting events that I'm practically guaranteed to use this credit (split into two up-to-$150 biannual credits; through Dec. 31, 2027)
  • Up to $288 per year with Apple Music and Apple TV+: An easy, one-time activation for both services (through June 22, 2027). This allowed me to cancel my Spotify Premium subscription, saving me over $12 a month.
  • Up to $120 per year with Lyft: Up to $10 each month (through Sept. 30, 2027; does not apply to Wait & Save, bike or scooter rides).
  • Up to $120 per year for Peloton subscriptions: I use this when I'm traveling so I can keep up with workouts.
  • Up to $120 in credits every four years for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or Nexus: I always recommend Global Entry since it includes PreCheck.

If you're strategic, these credits can add thousands of dollars in value over the course of a year.

Lounge access

Sapphire Reserve cardholders get access to:

Chase Sapphire Lounge Philadelphia
The Chase Sapphire Lounge in Philadelphia. ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Chase's newer lounges are shaping up to be some of the best in the U.S. and are beautifully designed with elevated food and amenities. They're not as widespread as American Express' Centurion Lounges yet, but they're expanding quickly.

Cardholders can also add authorized users for $195, who get full lounge access on their own.

Hotel and elite status benefits

The Sapphire Reserve includes IHG One Platinum Elite status (through Dec. 31, 2027), which offers:

  • Early check-in and late checkout (when available)
  • Complimentary room upgrades (when available)
  • 60% bonus points on stays

You'll also get a $100 property credit and complimentary breakfast on stays booked through The Edit. And, you'll receive Hertz Five Star status for car rentals.

You can also unlock extra perks with brands like Hyatt, IHG and Southwest Airlines after spending $75,000 on the card in a calendar year.

Travel protections

This is the card I trust most for booking flights and hotels directly. Highlights include:

Chase once fully reimbursed me for damaged luggage on an international trip, a claim that took me just five minutes to submit. The strong protections are one of the reasons I prioritize using this card for airfare.

How to earn and use your rewards

Understanding how you can earn and redeem points with the Sapphire Reserve is key to maximizing the card's overall value.

Earning points

The Sapphire Reserve has strong bonus categories, particularly for travelers:

  • 10 points per dollar spent on Peloton equipment and accessory purchases (of at least $150; maximum of 50,000 points; through Dec. 31, 2027)
  • 8 points per dollar spent on purchases made through Chase Travel℠ (including The Edit)
  • 5 points per dollar spent on Lyft rides (through Sept. 30, 2027)
  • 4 points per dollar spent on flights and hotels booked directly
  • 3 points per dollar spent on dining worldwide
  • 1 point per dollar spent on everything else

D3SIGN/GETTY IMAGES

I primarily use this card to earn 4 points per dollar spent on flights and direct hotel bookings, and 3 points per dollar spent on dining, both at home and while traveling abroad. And since the card has no foreign transaction fees, I use it often when traveling abroad.

Redeeming points

You have several ways to redeem Ultimate Rewards points, but the two most valuable are transferring points to partners for sweet-spot redemptions or using them to book travel through Chase.

Ultimate Rewards points transfer to 13 airline and hotel partners, including my favorites:

Qatar Airways Qsuite
Qatar Airways Qsuite. QATAR AIRWAYS/FACEBOOK

I try to leverage a transfer bonus to squeeze even more value out of my flight redemptions. I recently took advantage of a 30% bonus to transfer just 3,000 Chase points to Iberia Club to book a flight from Seville to Barcelona, Spain, on Vueling (plus $22 in taxes).

You can also redeem points through Chase's travel booking portal at competitive rates, particularly when using Points Boost for better-value premium airfare and select hotel redemptions.

TPG Senior Director of Content Summer Hull found Disneyland hotels for just 17,000 points a night using Points Boost, compared to triple the amount of points through Marriott. For many travelers (especially beginners), this is simpler than juggling transfer partners.

Downsides to consider about the Chase Sapphire Reserve

No premium card is perfect, and this one requires some intentional effort.

  • The $795 annual fee is among the highest on the market.
  • If you're chasing lounge access alone, there are cheaper options.
  • General travel purchases (like parking or tolls) do not earn bonus points.
  • You must receive the $300 travel credit before you start earning points on travel.
  • The card works best for people willing to actively manage multiple statement credits.

Still, if you use the credits consistently and prefer transferring points for elevated redemptions, the Sapphire Reserve can easily justify its cost.

Sapphire Reserve vs. Amex Platinum

The American Express Platinum Card® is the Sapphire Reserve's closest competitor. Both are premium travel cards with high annual fees, valuable points and extensive perks — but they're built for slightly different types of travelers.

The Platinum offers the industry's strongest lounge network and a long list of statement credits with high-end brands. Enrollment is required for select benefits.

It's a great fit if you can take advantage of benefits like Centurion Lounge access, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings, Hilton and Marriott elite status, and statement credits for entertainment and fitness.

The Sapphire Reserve, on the other hand, focuses more on simplicity and everyday value. Its automatic annual travel credit, strong earning rate on dining and best-in-class travel protections make it easier to use consistently without managing so many credits.

Choose the Amex Platinum if you prioritize:

  • Unmatched lounge access, including Centurion Lounges
  • High-end lifestyle statement credits that fit your spending
  • Access to more transfer partners (20 versus 13)

Choose the Sapphire Reserve if you value:

  • Simpler, more flexible credits that reduce the effective annual fee
  • Stronger travel protections
  • Higher earnings on dining

When to apply for the Chase Sapphire Reserve

Now is the best time to apply for this card as Chase is offering its highest-ever bonus on the Sapphire Reserve to eligible cardholders.

Check your eligibility to see if you're targeted for an elevated offer to earn up to 175,000 points after spending $6,000 in the first three months. These points are worth up to $3,588 according to TPG's December 2025 valuations. (The standard public offer is 125,000 points for the same spending requirement.) You must check to see if you're eligible for the 175,000 point offer via the Chase pre-qualification widget. There is no impact to your credit score. This offer is only available via this tool.

Before applying, remember Chase's 5/24 rule and Sapphire family restrictions. Chase will tell you during the application if you're eligible for the bonus.

Bottom line

The Chase Sapphire Reserve remains one of the most powerful travel rewards cards available — especially for people who enjoy actively earning and redeeming their points and maximizing their card perks.

For me, the combination of top-tier earnings, valuable transfer partners, premium travel protections and useful credits makes it a mainstay in my wallet.

A forgotten hotel credit on a United card saved me $200 — and it was super easy to use

I have a lot of rewards credit cards — probably a couple dozen if I took the time to count.

As a result, one perk I had completely forgotten about turned out to be a $200 hotel credit, hidden in plain sight.

While I do a pretty good job of maximizing the major perks on my cards, some of the smaller, harder-to-use or more obscure perks do go unused from time to time.

One newer perk that I'll admit hasn't been on my radar — and might not be on some of yours — is a $200 hotel credit on my United Club℠ Card (see rates and fees).

Here's how I put it to good use.

Related: Review of the United Club Card

Easy to forget and easy to use $200 hotel credit

In case you also had forgotten, there's now a $200 hotel credit on the United Club card (and actually a number of other cool but easy-to-overlook credits, including a $200 statement credit to fly on JSX).

Probably like many others, I have that card primarily for its United Club access, so some of its other perks were just 'nice to haves' and not the main reason that I got the card.

However, I recently found myself needing one more room at a specific hotel the night before a cruise departing from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

I was determined not to pay full price for the extra room we needed at the last minute if I didn't have to, so I started searching through my various credit cards for any potential unused travel or hotel credits.

hotel property
SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY

I'd already used the various headlining hotel credits on my American Express Platinum Card® and Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees), but after going pretty much card by card, I realized that the $200 statement credit available each anniversary year on my United Club via the Renowned Hotels and Resorts was still fully intact and unused.

To use the credit, which was actually just added earlier this year, you simply book and pay via the Renowned Hotels and Resorts program using your United Club card. The $200 statement credit should appear on your credit card account within a few days to a few weeks following the charge.

Related: Is the United Club Card worth the annual fee?

Getting even more value out of the credit

When booking with Renowned Hotels and Resorts, whether you use the credit or not, you also receive daily breakfast for two and a $100 property credit, among other perks.

This meant I wasn't just saving $200 on the one-night stay — I was also getting about $150 in additional perks.

SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY

During my search, I found some solid hotels in the Renowned Hotels and Resorts collection, including some that sometimes price at or below $200, such as the iconic Bellagio in Las Vegas.

CHASE

However, many hotels, including the Pier Sixty-Six hotel near the Port Everglades cruise terminal, where I booked, seem to start in the $300-600 per night range.

CHASE

If you want to maximize your savings using this credit, I recommend putting it toward a stay that costs close to $200 so you can break even and pay nothing out of pocket.

However, if you prefer splashing out at luxury properties, the $200 credit is a nice deduction from your overall total — especially with the other included benefits you'll get by booking with this program.

As for us, this stay worked out perfectly.

$200 credit posted very quickly

Not only was the hotel — and its food, which we very much enjoyed with the credit — fantastic, but the $200 credit posted to my United Club Card account quickly.

CHASE

An almost-forgotten hotel credit on my United Club card turned into the perfect way to dramatically bring down the cost of that hotel night. The fact that I'll be dreaming of the fluffy pillows until the next time I have an excuse to stay again on a future cruise out of Port Everglades (hopefully using next year's credit) is just the cherry on top.

Save with 1 search: How Skyscanner simplifies trip planning

When it's time to plan a trip, I don't want to get bogged down switching between tabs or bouncing around airline, hotel and car rental websites just to figure out what's affordable. I also don't love using online travel agencies I've never heard of, especially when it's unclear what their extra fees or policies might be.

That's why I often start my search on Skyscanner. It's not an online travel agency; it's a metasearch tool that pulls together results from more than a thousand travel providers so I can see everything in one place.

Once I find an itinerary I like, I click through and book directly with the airline or hotel. That way, I still earn points and miles and use my loyalty benefits I get from having hotel elite status while knowing I got a fair price.

Here's how I use Skyscanner and why it has become an important part of my travel planning process.

Finding inspiration when I don't know where to go

Some of my favorite trips have started without a destination in mind. When I just want to get away, I use Skyscanner's "Explore Everywhere" feature. I plug in my home airport, set flexible dates and see what comes up. It ranks destinations by price, and I can filter based on the type of trip I'm craving: beach, nightlife, adventure ... you name it.

I also like the "Underrated Destinations" tab for spotting places I might not have considered. A few years ago, I booked an unforgettable trip to Svalbard in northern Norway (the world's northernmost airport with scheduled commercial flights) simply because I saw a great deal pop up. I built the entire trip around that one affordable flight.

Call it main-character energy meets spontaneous adventure.

Skyscanner screenshot
SKYSCANNER

Using the 'Cheapest Month' feature to time my trips

When I've already picked a destination, I use the "Cheapest Month" tool to see when fares are usually lowest. It's a simple feature, but one that can make a big difference.

Instead of guessing when to book a trip to Tokyo or Lisbon, Portugal, I can see at a glance which months are likely to offer the best value and plan my paid time off accordingly.

Related: The 10 best places to visit in December

Setting alerts and catching fare drops

There are times when I'm eager to book travel but see that the current prices are too high when I first search, so I put off booking.

I can set up an alert on Skyscanner that will notify me when prices change. When they drop to a price that's within my budget, I can pull the trigger on booking my next trip.

On the mobile app, there's also a feature called "Drops" that flags routes where fares have fallen by 20% or more. It's like having a deal-finding friend who never sleeps.

I also save searches so I can easily revisit them — especially for group trips where someone's still "thinking about it" in the group chat. When they finally say "yes," my saved results are ready to go.

Skyscanner screenshot
SKYSCANNER

Choosing self-transfer fares to combine flights I never would have found otherwise

Not everyone is aware of this, but Skyscanner also displays self-transfer fares, which combine separate flights from different airlines into a single, smart itinerary.

Instead of being limited to one carrier or alliance, you can unlock new routing options and significant savings. You can view the entire journey, including details on layovers and baggage rules, in one search.

Here's an example. Say you want to live out your "White Lotus" fantasy in Thailand. The latest season was filmed on the beautiful island of Koh Samui, but your airline of choice might only fly to Bangkok, the country's capital, without offering onward connections to your final destination, as it doesn't fly there itself or maybe doesn't partner and sell tickets with any airline that does.

Skyscanner can show itinerary options that can fly all the way to Samui International Airport (USM) by self-transferring and allowing you to choose the itinerary in one place, rather than going back and forth between your favorite airline and Thai-based airlines to ensure you find an itinerary that works for you. If you need to change airports to make this connection, Skyscanner will notify you of this before you book your tickets.

Related: 5 hotels in Thailand to check into for a 'White Lotus'-inspired getaway

Anantara Mai Khao Phuket hotel
CAMERON SPERANCE/THE POINTS GUY

Bottom line

Many people assume Skyscanner is an online travel agent, but it's actually more like a travel ally, a comparison tool with lots of neat features.

If you know exactly where you want to go, it can show the cheapest months, alert you when prices drop and send Drops for the cheapest flight deals. I really appreciate the self-transfer fares, as they can piece together flights from different airlines that other comparison tools might miss, allowing you to save money while traveling to lesser-known destinations.

I'm wary of booking through online travel agents, even if they show cheap travel results, both because I don't know what their change and cancellation policies and fees are (is it worth taking this on to save $20?) and because I may not be able to use elite status benefits or earn points and miles if I've booked through a third party. This is especially possible when staying at luxury hotels.

Instead, I love saving time and money by using an online comparison tool and then booking directly. I know exactly what I've booked and that I've found the best price.

The 10 best places to travel in January 2026

While the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day is peak travel season in many parts of the world, January offers a welcome pause from the holiday rush. It is an opportune time to hit the reset button, recover from end-of-the-year burnout and, even better, take advantage of off-peak travel deals. To compensate for the drop in demand this time of year, many airlines, hotels and cruises lower their prices — making January a smart time to score a deal on a leisure trip.

On top of that, January has something for every kind of traveler, whether you prefer skiing powder-filled slopes in the Northern Hemisphere or sunning on sugary sand beaches below the equator.

To spark inspiration for your first vacation in the new year, here are the 10 best places to travel in January in the U.S. and beyond.

Cape Town

ANDRE DIAS DUARTÉ/GETTY IMAGES

January is the hottest and driest month in South Africa's legislative capital, with daytime temperatures averaging in the mid- to low 80s, making it ideal for a variety of outdoor activities. If you're a nature lover, head to Boulders Beach early in the morning to see African penguins and their newborn chicks. Another great spot for wildlife spotting (namely, Cape fur seals) is Duiker Island in Hout Bay. If you're in the mood to simply soak up some sun, your best bets are Camps Bay Beach, the Clifton beaches and Muizenberg Beach.

Oenophiles should book the Stellenbosch Wine Tractor Wine Tasting Tour, a unique hop-on, hop-off experience that explores 10 wine producers in Stellenbosch, a region renowned for its cabernet sauvignon and pinotage.

The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, also known as Kaapse Klopse, is an annual celebration featuring thousands of musicians, singers and dancers. It takes place Jan. 2, a date of historical importance because it was the day enslaved people were allowed time off to celebrate after New Year's Day.

TPG tip: Opened earlier this year, Canopy by Hilton Cape Town Longkloof is in the hip City Bowl neighborhood, which is chock-full of buzzy restaurants and popular attractions, such as the Bo-Kaap and Company's Garden. In January, rooms are available from $204 or 54,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Pyeongchang, South Korea

LIGHT OF PEACE/GETTY IMAGES

Japan might be the most famous Asian destination for skiing, but here's an insider tip: South Korea is also packed with world-class slopes. (Now you know why Pyeongchang was selected to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.) Located approximately 110 miles east of South Korea's capital of Seoul in the Taebaek Mountains, Pyeongchang is home to several popular ski resorts, including Yongpyong Resort (South Korea's largest ski resort), Phoenix Park and Alpensia Ski Resort.

If a wintry hike is more your speed, head to Odaesan National Park, which has numerous trails for all skill levels. It's also where you'll discover Woljeongsa Temple, an important Buddhist site brimming with national treasures, like the nine-story stone pagoda.

TPG tip: Drawing inspiration from iconic European Alpine villages, the InterContinental Alpensia Pyeongchang Resort offers breathtaking views of Balwang Mountain and Alpensia Lake, 238 classic guest rooms and suites and a bountiful breakfast buffet to fuel you up for a day on the slopes. Rates start at $152 or 26,000 IHG One Rewards points per night in January.

Oahu, Hawaii

Though January means occasional and fleeting showers on Oahu, it also means affordable hotel rates, fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures with average highs in the low 80s. It's also a prime time for spotting humpback whales, which migrate to the Hawaiian Islands in the winter months.

While the water is definitely warm enough for swimming, it's best to avoid the North Shore's extremely high surf — leave that to the professionals — and stick to Oahu's south shores, like Waikiki's Duke Kahanamoku Beach and Fort DeRussy Beach Park. There are also numerous scenic hikes around the island, from the lush rainforested Manoa Falls Trail to the Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail for breathtaking panoramic views.

TPG tip: Opened in April, the Hampton Inn & Suites Maui North Shore has spacious residential-style accommodations in one of Oahu's most charming regions. In January, rates start at $312 or 80,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Riviera Nayarit, Mexico

January in Riviera Nayarit is what most people envision when it comes to ideal beach weather: mild and dry conditions in the low 80s, with warm days and cool nights.

This 200-mile-long coastal stretch along the Pacific Ocean, just north of Puerto Vallarta, is also a smart alternative to the more touristy destinations of Cancun and Cabo San Lucas. You'll find a vast coastline with a dozen certified-clean beaches blessed with crystal-clear water and pristine sand. Playa Destiladeras is a fan favorite, offering a wealth of outdoor adventures and rich cultural experiences.

January is also the beginning of whale-watching season here.

TPG tip: Opening in December, Siari Riviera Nayarit, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve immerses guests in a serene sanctuary spanning 920 lush acres. It features 91 ocean-view rooms and suites, Zulu (a seafood eatery helmed by Mexican chef David Castro Hussong) and Ha Yeka Wellness Center, a spa inspired by the local Huichol community. Rates start at $748 or 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night in January.

Punta del Este, Uruguay

Frequently referred to as "The Riviera of South America," Punta del Este — located on the Atlantic Coast in Uruguay's Maldonado province — has long been a beloved leisure destination for Argentines and Brazilians, thanks to its vibrant cityscape and pristine beaches. And the peak of summer, in January, makes a swanky warm-weather escape for those living north of the equator.

In addition to beautiful beaches, Punta del Este is home to a thrilling polo and art scene. Visit the world-famous Ralli Museum, which features works by Salvador Dalí and Fernando Botero, and Le Mano, a giant hand sculpture emerging from the sand by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal.

TPG tip: Adored for its secluded location, personalized service and high-end amenities, including an 18-hole Arnold Palmer-designed golf course, Fasano Punta del Este epitomizes quiet luxury. January rates for this American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts member start at $966 per night.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

It's no secret: Jackson Hole transforms into a world-class winter destination this time of year. However, what you may not know is that early to mid-January is an especially good time to plan a vacation. This time frame is not nearly as congested as the peak winter month of February, and the conditions for skiing, snowboarding and other outdoor pursuits are excellent with heavy snowfall and super-fluffy powder.

When it's time to fuel up after a long day on the slopes, head to a local mainstay like Teton Thai or Bin22. (Teton Thai's best-selling massaman curry will warm you from the inside out.)

TPG tip: A member of Marriott's Autograph Collection, The Cloudveil provides a well-appointed and laid-back stay near Jackson, Wyoming's Town Square. It has 100 handsome rooms warmed up with wood and leather, and The Bistro, which turns out hearty, all-day European fare. Accommodations are available from $550 or 73,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night in January.

The Bahamas

The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort. FOUR SEASONS

Falling in the Bahamas' dry season, January brings on low humidity, pleasant temperatures hovering around the low 80s and sun-drenched days. Waves are calmer this time of year, resulting in extended visibility underwater, making it perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving.

January is also the time for spotting humpback whales, which migrate from their feeding grounds in the North Atlantic to the area for breeding. Beyond the striking azure waters, The Bahamas also has plenty of cultural appeal. Learn about Junkanoo's colorful 200-plus-year history at the Museum of Junkanoo. Dig into Bahamian staples, such as conch fritters and sky juice, at Arawak Cay. Browse beautiful works by local artisans at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas. Drink up local culture at Bon Vivants, the country's first craft cocktail bar.

TPG tip: Spread across 35 lush acres with Versailles-inspired gardens, The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas — which has been around for 60-plus years — remains one of the destination's most coveted stays. Nightly rates in January start at $1,965. Receive daily breakfast for two, late checkout and more when you book via the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program.

Sedona, Arizona

PINK JEEP TOURS/FACEBOOK

If your dream vacation involves peaceful hikes, cooler weather and budget-friendly lodging, consider planning a Sedona vacation in January. Daytime highs typically hover in the low 60s, and most hotels lower their rates during the offseason. In addition to hiking, you can experience Sedona's spectacular landscapes on a jeep tour; Pink Adventure Tours is a popular choice.

As an established wellness destination, Sedona also offers numerous spas — Sedona's New Day Spa and Gateway Cottage Wellness Center are two popular independently owned picks — where you can unwind your mind and body. And since Sedona is one of only 20 certified Dark Sky communities in the world, it's an unparalleled spot for stargazing. Remember to bundle up, as the nights can get quite chilly.

TPG tip: One of Sedona's newer hotels, Sky Rock Sedona, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel is a comfortable stay close to the area's most popular hiking trails. After a day of exploring, unwind in the outdoor hot tub or relax by a fire pit as you take in Sedona's stunning night sky. The property has January rates starting at $193 or 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

While skiing Banff's world-class resorts (Mount Norquay Ski Resort, Sunshine Village and the Lake Louise Ski Resort) in January, when the snowfall is heavy, is a no-brainer, there are lots more ways to enjoy a winter vacation in the Canadian Rockies. SnowDays Festival, held Jan. 16 to Feb. 8 in 2026, transforms downtown Banff into a wintry wonderland with live snow carvings and skijoring (a winter sport where a horse pulls a trick skier) demos.

Prefer to completely relax? Then visit Banff Upper Hot Springs for a scenic soak in its steamy, mineral-rich waters. For panoramic views of the six mountain ranges, take a ride up the Banff Gondola. A hike in Johnston Canyon will reward you with stunning views of frozen waterfalls and ice formations.

TPG tip: Steeped in history and grandeur, Fairmont Banff Springs has been called the "Castle in the Rockies" since opening in 1988. Nightly rates in January start at $433. Book directly with Accor Live Limitless points or via American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts to receive daily breakfast for two, late checkout and more.

Sydney

LAURA REID/GETTY IMAGES

It's peak summer season Down Under in Sydney. Though Australia's biggest metropolis holds year-round appeal, it especially comes alive in January, when daytime temperatures average in the low 80s.

Whether you prefer to sink your toes into the soft sands at the world-famous Bondi Beach, get up close to the iconic Sydney Opera House or see 350-plus animal species at Taronga Zoo Sydney, there's no shortage of ways to take in the sun and fresh air. And mark your calendars for this year's Sydney Festival, a city-wide arts festival featuring over 100 music, dance and theatrical performances and events celebrating its 50th anniversary, being held Jan. 8 to 25, 2026.

TPG tip: As Australia's first Kimpton property, the Kimpton Margot Sydney dazzles with a glamorous art deco design — the historic building dates back to the 1930s — a buzzy restaurant helmed by celebrity Australian chef Luke Mangan and 172 spacious guest rooms and suites kitted out with elegant furnishings. Rates start at $190 or 35,000 IHG One Rewards points per night in January.

Amex Platinum Card members: Take advantage of your credits before the end of the year

If you already have one of American Express' top-tier cards — or are considering an application — act now to maximize the credits on these cards.

The American Express Platinum Card® underwent a major refresh earlier this year, adding credits for up to $75 in purchases at U.S. Lululemon retail stores (excluding outlets) and online per quarter and up to $100 at U.S. Resy-affiliated restaurants per quarter (enrollment required).

(The Business Platinum Card® from American Express was also refreshed; it didn't add any new quarterly credits, but it's still a good reminder to make sure you're getting value out of the existing ones.)

And they're both offering high welcome bonuses to new cardmembers, who can apply and immediately start using their card online, unlocking value from the very beginning.

Here's why applying now can help you capture extra value before the end of the year.

New cardmember? Get an instant card number

Good news: If you want to pick up the Amex Platinum, you can apply online and get an instant card number to use for online purchases and add to your digital wallet like Apple Pay (while you wait up to seven business days for your physical card to arrive in the mail).

When you apply, you can find out your offer and see if you are eligible for as high as 175,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.

Then, you can immediately enroll in the statement credits that you can maximize before the end of the year.

Similarly, new Amex Business Platinum Card members can earn the highest-ever publicly available bonus on this card: 200,000 bonus points after spending $20,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months of card membership.

Like consumer Amex Platinum cardmembers, Business Platinum cardmembers can receive an instant card number upon approval and start maximizing their monthly and quarterly credits immediately.

Advice for Platinum Card members

With the up to $75 quarterly Lululemon statement credits, up to $100 quarterly Resy statement credits and up to $120 annually ($9.99 monthly) for a Uber One membership (subject to auto renewal), Platinum Card members can extract up to $185 in value from their card between now and the end of the year.

That almost completely offsets the $200 increase in the card's annual fee, now $895 (see rates and fees), from its refresh.

It's essential that both new and existing cardmembers activate their Lululemon, Resy and Uber One benefits in their Amex account before making any purchases so these perks trigger correctly. New cardmembers should also enroll in all other relevant benefits, especially the three other monthly statement credits mentioned below.

Then, use your card to spend at least:

  • Up to $75 at U.S. Lululemon at retail stores (excluding outlets) and online: My advice is to stack with the Rakuten shopping portal and browse deals in the secondhand and "We Made Too Much" sale sections. Both online and in-store purchases are eligible for the credit.
  • Up to $100 at a U.S. Resy restaurant: Look for a participating restaurant in your area; you don't need a reservation to be eligible to receive the credit. Before dining, new cardmembers should check that they can tap to pay on a terminal or ask the staff to manually input their card number. There is a quirk that sometimes prevents the statement credit from being received, which I explain later on.

Finally, enroll in an Uber One membership and get either a $9.99 monthly (or $96 annual) membership covered with your Platinum Card.

Additional value for new Platinum Card members

If you apply for your new Platinum Card now, you can take advantage of an extra $52.95 in monthly credits this year. After enrolling in the benefits, use your card to receive:

  • Up to $25 for digital entertainment services: Eligible services include the Disney+ Bundle, Hulu and YouTube TV, to name a few.
  • Up to $15 in Uber Cash: This credit is valid on Uber rides and Uber Eats orders in the U.S. Uber Cash will only be deposited into one Uber account when you add the Amex Platinum as a payment method and redeem with any Amex card.
  • Up to $12.95 for a Walmart+ membership: This credit applies when purchasing one membership (subject to auto-renewal; Plus Ups excluded).

Set your instant Platinum Card number as your payment method for each of the services. Then, when you receive your physical card, check that the four-digit CVV on the front and the expiration date on the back match those on the instant card. If they don't, update those numbers.

Advice for Business Platinum Card members

The only statement credits that Amex has added or enhanced with the Amex Business Platinum refresh are annual and biannual (every six months) statement credits. The annual fee also increased to $895 (see rates and fees).

Having said that, this is still a good reminder for new and existing cardmembers to get $150 in value from the following statement credits before the end of the year (enrollment required).

  • Up to a $10 monthly statement credit for U.S. wireless telephone services: Use this statement credit to pay for your cellphone bill. You'll also get cellphone protection by paying the bill with this card.
  • Up to a $50 quarterly statement credit on eligible purchases with Hilton: First, make sure to enroll in Hilton for Business (for free). Then, use your card to pay for room rates and incidental charges at a Hilton property. Data points show you may also be able to receive this statement credit when dining at a restaurant or purchasing a product from a gift store located within a Hilton property, even if you're not staying at the hotel.
  • Up to a $90 quarterly Indeed statement credit: Use this statement credit for online purchases with Indeed.

Again, make sure you activate these perks first so that your purchases trigger these benefits.

A note on the semi-annual hotel statement credit

Both the Platinum Card and Business Platinum provide an up to $600 annual hotel statement credit per calendar year.

You'll receive up to $300 semiannually on prepaid American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel® when you pay with your eligible Platinum Card. (The Hotel Collection stays require a two-night minimum.)

You won't want to miss out on this up to $300 benefit by forgetting to use it before the end of the year. If you don't have immediate travel planned, you can use the current statement credit (for the second half of 2025) to book a stay in 2026. You only have to book a prepaid stay before the end of the year. You don't have to complete the stay in 2025.

TPG credit cards writer Augusta Stone plans to use her credit toward a last-minute weekend trip to Chicago. TPG credit cards editor Olivia Mittak used her statement credit to cover most of a two-night stay in New York City before transiting on to Germany this Thanksgiving.

An important note on contactless payments

The terms and conditions for most Amex statement credits say something like this:

"The transaction may not be eligible if the merchant uses a third-party to process or submit the transaction to American Express (e.g. using mobile or wireless card readers)."

Contactless Payment
SOLSTOCK/GETTY IMAGES

Frustratingly, it is not guaranteed that you will receive your statement credit because it may not code or process the way that Amex wants it to.

I've faced this issue twice when using the biannual up to $50 Resy credits at U.S. Resy restaurants on my American Express® Gold Card; neither posted within the standard eight- to 10-week period after the transaction was made.

But after waiting 10 weeks, I was able to receive the statement credits by asking the agent through the online chat function on my Amex account to manually apply the statement credits. So, my advice would be to keep an eye on your account; if the statement credit doesn't appear within 10 weeks, ask Amex to manually apply it.

Bottom line

By being strategic about timing, those with the Amex Platinum or the Business Platinum can take advantage of their statement credits before the end of the year.

I'd encourage new cardmembers to apply now, note down their instant card number and immediately add it to their digital wallet.

Remember to enroll in these benefits first to ensure eligible purchases trigger the statement credits. And keep an eye on your account to ensure you receive your credits within a 10-week time frame; if not, use the chat function to ask Amex to manually apply them.

Best Western Rewards: How to earn and redeem points, elite status and more

Best Western Rewards is a program many travelers overlook. After all, it isn't a transfer partner of any major credit card rewards currencies, and its elite benefits are minimal. But, the program has a mix of luxurious WorldHotels properties, value-oriented SureStay Hotels and Best Western hotels and resorts at various price points where you can earn and redeem points. So, here's what you should know about Best Western Rewards.

Best Western Rewards hotel brands

Best Western Rewards serves three portfolios that contain brands as follows:

  • Best Western Hotels & Resorts: Aiden by Best Western, Best Western, Best Western Plus, Best Western Premier, BW Premier Collection, BW Signature Collection, Executive Residency by Best Western, Glo, Vib and @Home by Best Western
  • SureStay Hotels: SureStay, SureStay Collection, SureStay Studio and SureStay Plus
  • WorldHotels: WorldHotels Crafted, WorldHotels Distinctive, WorldHotels Elite and WorldHotels Luxury

Best Western acquired WorldHotels in 2019 to add some more luxurious hotels to the Best Western Rewards portfolio. Meanwhile, Best Western created SureStay Hotels in 2016 as a white-label portfolio designed to appeal to value-minded travelers.

Best Western Rewards elite status

Blue is the base tier of Best Western Rewards membership, but you can earn Best Western Rewards elite status when you meet specific qualifying night thresholds within a calendar year:

  • Gold: 5 qualifying nights
  • Platinum: 7 qualifying nights
  • Diamond: 15 qualifying nights
  • Diamond Select: 25 qualifying nights

Once you accrue enough qualifying nights in a calendar year for a specific Best Western status, you'll hold that status for the rest of the current calendar year and the entire next calendar year. So if you stay 15 qualifying nights in 2025, you'll hold Best Western Diamond status through Dec. 31, 2026.

The perks of Best Western elite status are minimal. However, Gold members and above receive complimentary water and 500 bonus points upon arrival at a participating hotel (bonus points aren't offered at some international locations) and Platinum members and above get early check-in and late checkout (both based on availability). Plus, Best Western Rewards elite members enjoy bonus points on qualifying stays as follows:

  • Gold: 10% bonus
  • Platinum: 15% bonus
  • Diamond: 30% bonus
  • Diamond Select: 50% bonus

Finally, Best Western offers a generous status match offer that lets members match any other hotel elite status. Best Western considers the number of nights you'd need to stay for the other program's elite status, so you'll want to match whatever hotel elite status you have that requires the most nights to earn.

If you live in North America, you can send an email with your full name, address, email address, phone number, Best Western Rewards member number and proof of elite status in another hotel program to StatusMatch@bestwestern.com. Proof of elite status in another hotel program can be a copy of the other program's loyalty card or account statement, provided it includes your full name.

How to earn Best Western Rewards points

It can be difficult to earn Best Western Rewards points because the program doesn't partner with any major transferable currencies. However, as you'll learn in this section, there are still several ways to earn them.

Stays with Best Western

You'll earn points on the room rate before taxes and fees for qualifying nights at Best Western hotel brands unless you book through an online travel agency or tour operator, or book an ineligible rate, including employee rates, wholesale rates, crew rates, and discounted long stay rates of 30 nights or more.

Specifically, you'll earn 10 points per dollar spent at most Best Western Rewards hotel brands — although you'll only earn 5 points per dollar spent at SureStay Studio by Best Western, Executive Residency by Best Western and @Home by Best Western hotels.

SureStay by Best Western Helen Downtown
SureStay by Best Western Helen Downtown. BEST WESTERN

You can earn points for up to 10 rooms per stay in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean and up to three rooms per stay in other regions as long as you stay in one of the rooms, pay for all the rooms, members in the rooms don't claim points and you tie your Best Western Rewards number to the rooms at booking or check-in.

If you're traveling on a group booking, up to 10 rooms per stay can earn points in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean, and up to three rooms per stay can earn points in other regions. However, only the person making the reservation can decide which members receive points.

Best Western Rewards credit cards

Best Western Rewards offers two cobranded credit cards: the $89 annual fee Best Western Rewards® Premium Visa Signature® Card and the no-annual-fee Best Western Rewards® Visa Signature® Card.

The information for the Best Western Rewards Premium Visa Signature Card and Best Western Rewards Visa Signature Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Meanwhile, the no-annual-fee Best Western Rewards Visa Signature Card earns 4 points per dollar spent on Best Western stays and 2 points per dollar spent on all other purchases. How to redeem Best Western Rewards points

TPG's November 2025 valuations value Best Western points at 0.6 cents each, so you'll typically want to get at least that value from your points when you redeem them. Now, here's a look at some of the ways you can redeem Best Western Rewards points.

Book award stays with Best Western Rewards points

Award nights at Best Western Rewards properties range from 8,000 to 70,000 points per night. Rates vary based on various factors, including the property and the dates of your stay.

To see award options, log in to your Best Western account and check the "Use Rewards Points" box before searching for your stay. Then you can check the results via a map or list, and filter by various factors including distance, airport shuttle, free breakfast and free parking.

Redeeming Best Western points

Some properties may offer room types at various award costs. For example, on a sample date I searched, the Best Western Hotel Fino Tokyo Akasaka in Japan offered a double room for 28,000 points, a queen room for 32,000 points and a room with two single beds for 40,000 points.

Redeeming Best Western points
BEST WESTERN

You can also redeem as few as 5,000 points per night via Pay with Points. If you do so, the first 5,000 points will earn you $25 off your room rate, and each additional 1,000 points will earn you an additional $5 discount. You'll get 0.5 cents per point when you use Pay with Points, and you'll still earn points on the paid part of your booking.

Exchange Best Western Rewards points for airline rewards

You can convert your Best Western points into airline rewards with the following programs:

  • Aeromexico Rewards: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,600 points
  • Air Canada Aeroplan: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,000 points
  • Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,000 points
  • Avianca LifeMiles: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,000 miles
  • Cathay Asia Miles: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,000 miles
  • Flying Blue: 6,000 Best Western points for 1,000 points
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards: 5,000 Best Western points for 1,200 points

TPG's November 2025 valuations value Best Western points at 0.6 cents each, and these airline rewards at 0.8 to 1.55 cents each. Therefore, you'll almost always lose value when converting Best Western points into airline rewards.

Redeem Best Western points for gift cards

You can redeem points for Best Western e-gift cards at the following rates:

  • $10 Best Western e-gift card: 2,000 points
  • $25 Best Western e-gift card: 5,000 points
  • $50 Best Western e-gift card: 10,000 points
  • $100 Best Western e-gift card: 20,000 points
  • $250 Best Western e-gift card: 50,000 points

As you can tell, you'll get 0.5 cents per point when you redeem points for Best Western gift cards.

You can also redeem Best Western points for U.S. Digital Select gift cards at a rate of 16,000 points for a $50 gift card, 32,000 points for a $100 gift card and 64,000 points for a $200 gift card. Redeeming Best Western points for U.S. Digital Select gift cards only gives you 0.31 cents per point, though.

Transfer Best Western points to another member

You can transfer up to 150,000 points per rolling calendar year to other members. However, you can only transfer points in increments of 1,000 points, and your account must be at least 30 days old and not in a restricted state.

Best Western Rewards must review and approve transfers of over 70,000 points, so it may be best to keep your transfer to 70,000 points or less.

Donate Best Western points

Finally, you can donate Best Western points to select charities, including the American Red Cross, Canadian Red Cross, Hotels for Heroes, Best Friends Animal Society and two Best Western for a Better World programs.

Donate Best Western points
BEST WESTERN

Most donations are valued at 500 Best Western points for a $2 donation, resulting in a redemption rate of 0.4 cents per point.
